Deadly fighting as Gadhafi tries to retake rebel-held town
By the CNN Wire Staff
March 2, 2011 5:20 p.m. EST

Tripoli, Libya (CNN) -- Libyan aircraft bombed a section of eastern Libya on Wednesday as leader Moammar Gadhafi tried to retake control of an area seized by rebel forces.

A CNN crew saw the aircraft drop two bombs near al-Brega, a town in the east with key oil and natural gas facilities.

Later, a military aircraft dropped a third bomb. People on the ground shot and threw whatever they could at the aircraft, then fled.

It's all happening!

Quote:
3:47am

Evan Hill (@evanchill), Al Jazeera's online producer, was on a road near the port town of Brega earlier today when a fighter jet fired a missile that impacted metres away. The town saw intense fighting throughout Wednesday between pro- and anti-government forces. The jet was piloted by forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi. The video below was taken moments after the missile impact.

3:35am

A "distress call" from the port town of Brega, which anti-government forces defended against an attack from government troops earlier today, appears to be circulating online.

The veracity of this report cannot be verified, but we reproduce it here verbatim. It says:

"O Almanara Media! O free men of Libya! O honourable daughters of Libya! An URGENT URGENT distress call from the city of Brega. In the city of Hrawah which is situated between Raas Lanuf and Sirt, 70 cars full of mercenaries have just arrived to support the battalion which is present there. They plan to attack the city of Brega, occupy it and control its airport. I appeal to God! Please deliver my call of distress! Please! The people of Brega are distressed and the revolutionary youth plan to resist this battalion. By God I fear there may be a massacre tonight, help us help us help us!"

The rebels need to be organized efficiently. They seem to have a lot of numbers, but they need to assemble, get formed up into units and take the offensive. The defected military troops should form cadres to raise battalions of militia fighters.

89 octane Gas went up .14 this afternoon in Oklahoma City -- this is not a good sign -- our gas is usually a lot cheaper than in the rest of the country.

Al Jazeera are taking this opportunity to plug themselves. Well, why not? Every other news source does.

Quote:
6:00am

Amid our coverage of the unrest in Libya and other parts of Africa and the Middle East, Hillary Clinton, the US secretary of state, has apparently plugged Al Jazeera, saying:

"Al Jazeera has been the leader in that they are literally changing people’s minds and attitudes. And like it or hate it, it is really effective," she said.

In fact viewership of Al Jazeera is going up in the United States because it’s real news. You may not agree with it, but you feel like you’re getting real news around the clock instead of a million commercials...
I'm signing off now. You can follow Al Jazeera on: http://blogs.aljazeera.net/live/afri...-libya-march-3

Note that you have to call up a new page when the new day arrives in Libya (GMT + 2 hours)

British Foreign Minister William Hague said that France and Britain want to put "bold and ambitious measures" to next week's emergency European Union summit on the Libyan crisis.

Following talks with French counterpart Alain Juppe on ways to stop Gaddafi suppressing a revolt against his rule, Hague said: "Today we discussed how Britain and France will do everything we can to increase the pressure.

"We also agreed the international community including us and other partners will continue to plan for different contingencies, including a no-fly zone, to ensure that we can respond swiftly and resolutely to the events in Libya."

France rejected an offer by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez to mediate in Libya and dismissed talk of any solution that would allow embattled leader Mouammar Gaddafi to stay in power.

"Any mediation that allows Colonel Gaddafi to succeed himself is obviously not welcome," Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said in response to Chavez's proposal, speaking after talks with his British counterpart William Hague.

Chavez and Gaddafi have discussed plans for an international peacekeeping mission to mediate the crisis in Libya, rocked by two weeks of bloody clashes with protesters seeking to topple his 41-year-old regime.

Guido Westerwelle, Germany's foreign minister, says that a foreign military action against Libya would be counterproductive and called for additional sanctions against Gaddafi's regime.

He said the current sanctions are not enough and it would be a "wise proposal proposal to freeze every money flow to Libya next months."

Andres Izarra, the Venezuelan information minister, says that Libya and the Arab League are considering a mediation proposal by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez to find a peaceful solution to the crisis in the North African nation.

"We can confirm Libya's interest in accepting this proposal, as well as the Arab League's" interest, Izarra said. He added that Chavez, an ally of Gaddafi, recently spoke personally by telephone with Libya's embattled strongman to discuss the proposal.

Luis Moreno-Ocampo, chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, has announced that Muammar Gaddafi and key figures will be investigated for alleged crimes against humanity.

Speaking at a press conference in The Hague, the Netherlands, on Thursday, Moreno-Ocampo said he would investigate claims that peaceful forces had been attacked by forces loyal to Gaddafi.

He added that opposition forces would also be investigated.

The International Criminal Court is expected to announce a full investigation into human rights violations in Libya.

Prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo has said there is enough evidence to suggest crimes against humanity have been committed.

The investigation comes after the United Nations Security Council on Saturday ordered the court to look into possible crimes in Libya.

Officials from the Netherlands are working to win the release of the three Dutch marines detained in Libya, our correspondent Alan Fisher reports from The Hague.

This incident happened on Sunday but there's been a media blackout up until this point. The Dutch government believes that's allowed them to negotiate with the Libyans - thinking that more can be done the fewer people that know about this.

"Dutch authorities believe they will be able to secure the release of these three Dutch marines."

More on the Dutch marines detained in Libya - Reuters cites a defence ministry spokesman as saying the three marines were detained after being captured by forces loyal to Gaddafi while trying to rescue two Europeans.

The men were captured on Sunday by armed men after they had gone ashore at Sirte with a helicopter from a Dutch naval ship stationed off the coast of Libya to help with evacuations from the North African country, ministry spokesman Otte Beeksma said.

Dutch authorities are in "intensive diplomatic negotiations" with Gaddafi's government to secure the release of the marines, Beeksma said.

Witnesses in Ajdabiyah and the oil port town of Brega report fresh fighting today, a day after clashes between anti- and pro-Gaddafi forces left at least 10 civilians dead, residents said.

"Around two hours ago, warplanes dropped a bomb in the area between the oil company and the residential area," Fattah al-Moghrabi, director of supplies for Brega hospital, told the AFP news agency.

"As far as I know, there was no casualties," he said.

Al Jazeera's Hoda Abdel-Hamid, reporting from the eastern city of Benghazi on how the offer of mediation from Venezuela will be received by the opposition in Libya, says:

The only mediation they will consider is to find an exit strategy for Gaddafi and his family and all his close aides. They said there is no time anymore for dialogue. Mediation, unless it's with an exit strategy, will be quite difficult.

The Network of Free Ulema - Libya, a group of clerics in that country, alleges that pro-Gaddafi forces have been carrying out a "massive kidnapping campaign" in Tripoli, targetting opposition activists ahead of a call for marches in the capital following Friday prayers.

The statement from the group read:

This is to URGENTLY notify the world and the International Criminal Court in particular, that Gaddafi and his criminal accomplices are currently (March 2nd and 3rd 2011) implementing a massive kidnapping campaign in Tripoli and its vicinities in order to ‘clean up’ key youth leaders before tomorrow’s Friday prayers, and in order to ‘look good’ to the international Media, which has been invited to Tripoli as part of a public relations campaign aimed at covering up the crimes against humanity that have been inflicted upon the brave Libyan people. We call upon and urge every man and woman of good will, worldwide, to do their utmost to save our youth from the hands of Gaddafi, his thugs, and mercenaries."

Latest from Al Jazeera's blog:

Quote:
2:07am

Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's son, has been speaking to Al Jazeera's Anita McNaught in Tripoli. An excerpt from the interview:

It's a joke, please. We are not kids, stop calling us ... we have no money outside. [...] Give me a single evidence that we- show me our bank accounts [you allege that we have abroad]. Show me. [...]

"The west, we know them very well. When you are strong, they run after you. They are like, you know, they are like cats. If you are weak, they want to be like tigers. We know this game... we know them for a long time. The West, the Americans, the NATO ... we don't pay attention to them.

"Please, come on. We know the organised media campaign against Libya. This country will survive. I know they want to split the country. They want to just destroy it. They want to control its assets, it's a very rich country. Small population. This will not happen. So we are telling those people: be happy. This will never happen. Because the Libyan people are so united. And please, wait for surprises."

1:40am

According to a message posted on the Voices of Feb 17 site, things in the city of Az Zawiyah have been quiet just recently, with opposition forces who control the city organising committees to ensure that the city keeps running.

While people in the city have been singing, chanting slogans and even writing political poetry against Gaddafi, medical supplies in the city are reportedly running low. According to the person who recorded the message, pro-Gaddafi forces are not allowing medical supplies to pass through checkpoints if those carrying them say they are bound for Az Zawiyah. He said that one person falsely claimed that he was headed for Sabratha, and was allowed to pass.

There are calls in the city for a large demonstration and march after Friday prayers, when anti-government protesters say they will walk across the city to where Gaddafi's troops are stationed.

Al Jazeera latest news:

Quote:
4:12am

David Wyss, the chief economist at the Standard & Poor's ratings agency, tells Al Jazeera that the reason for the spike in global oil prices is not so much the loss in actual supply from Libya (it has currently cut production by about 1million barrels, which is being made up by Saudi Arabia), but because of the wider implications if the unrest in the country spreads.

He says that if unrest were to spread to the Persian Gulf, oil prices could "quite easily be back to the [2008] $148/barrel" level, the highest level oil prices have ever climbed to.

At the moment, he says with oil priced at about $101/barrel, the markets can cope, but it would be a problem if they approached those 2008 levels.

As for Libya, a supply disruption for a couple of months will not impact too badly either domestically or internationally, but anything longer than that would have more serious implications both for international oil prices but also for Libya's income.

3:46am

Saif al-Islam Gaddafi says bomb attacks at Brega were intended to "frighten" rebels into retreating. In an interview with Sky News, Gaddafi said:

The bombs were just to frighten them to go away. There is no city there, the city of Brega is miles away. I'm talking about the harbour, only oil refinery there."

He also stressed that the government would do everything in its power to maintain control of the oil refinery.

This is the oil and gas hub of Libya. All of us, we eat, we live because of Brega. Without Brega, six million people have no future because we export all of our oil from there.

"There are militia and they were filming themselves. They came with three tanks and heavy machine guns. There is a red line, you cannot control the harbour. Excuse me!

"Nobody will allow the militia to control Brega, it's like you allowing somebody to control Rotterdam harbour."

3:41am

Austrian anti-terrorism police have grilled Mustafa Zarti, one of Muammar Gaddafi's close confidantes, the interior minister said on Thursday.

Zarti was interrogated for several hours and then released, Maria Fekter told a public television channel. The vice-chairman of the Libyan Investment Authority looked after Gaddafi's assets in Austria and leftr Tripoli to take refuge in Vienna on February 21.

The Austrian central bank had earlier said that Libyan assets in Austrian banks that could be affected by EU sanctions amount to 1.2 billion euros.

After Muammar Gaddafi's consistent claims that those rebelling against his rule are drug-addled youths being manipulated by al-Qaeda, the Libyan anti-narcotics force now says it has intercepted 37 million units of Tramadol, a painkiller, that had been allegedly bought by a Libyan drug dealer "with links to al-Qaeda".
