We, of course, being all those interested in the Civil War. Even when people who are blaise about history think about it, they should realize that we all win when history is allowed to remain in those fields instead of the bricks and refuse of blind commerce.

This is the best news I've had in a LONG time. And, to give credit where it is due, Wal-Mart has announced that it it still going to purchase the 51-acres and then either donate it or put a conservation easement over it to ensure that it remains pristine. I think Sam Walton would be proud, and I tip my cap to Wal-Mart for doing the right thing.

This is great news. We must keep history intact. They already don't teach much of it in school anymore so the more of this the better.

What is Wallmart's CEO's name so we can send thank you emails? It's only right, considering I sent a hostile letter.

Give credit where credit is due.

Try a Google Search for Walmart. It is the largest chainof stores in the US, perhaps the whole world. They usually only want more of one thing, money. Regardless what it cost the areas where they build. I'm totally surprise that they backed down to build at this site and even more surprised that they are donating the land.

It's kind of a "mega"-market, mate.

Here's what the one in San Bernardino looks like.

ORANGE COUNTY DISAPPOINTED WITH WAL-MART DECISION

Orange County, Virginia, was stunned and disappointed to learn that Wal-Mart is abandoning its proposed location on Rt. 3. Orange County stood with Wal-Mart to defend in court County approval of its requested Special Use Permit. Orange County officials and staff worked very hard through a review process to balance economic development with private property rights and a respect for historic preservation in developing the Rt. 3 corridor with this Wal-Mart location.

The Orange County Economic Development Authority, Chamber of Commerce and many citizens supported the location of a Wal-Mart store and the Special Use Permit approved by the Board of Supervisors for this 51 acre site.
Forces from largely outside the County, using exaggeration, took advantage of the horrors of the Civil War to achieve their own goals. Their approach was contrary to a federal battlefield commission which encouraged cooperation with the locality. Even the eminent Dr. James McPherson conceded that no event of historic significance occurred on this land.

The extensive viewshed studies and modifications to the proposed store made by SUP conditions would have provided effective buffering to, not only the Wal-Mart, but to the other development proposed for this site. Concepts of private property ownership, which were well-understood by our ancestors at the time of the Constitution and the time of the Civil War, were forgotten by the Plaintiffs in their zeal.

Although Wal-Mart has stated it is still committed to locating in Orange County, the County is anxious to have that assurance demonstrated substantially by Wal-Mart meeting with the County in the coming month to move forward with an alternate site. The Board is pleased with Wal-Mart’s pledge to reimburse the County for all of its administrative costs and attorneys’ fees expended for the review process and litigation so that the citizens of Orange County will not suffer because of the Wal-Mart withdrawal.

Orange County will continue to work with Wal-Mart to find an acceptable site on Rt. 3 and minimize the economic damage created by those who brought the lawsuit. Orange County remains committed to expanding its tax base through economic development and good land use planning in the Rt. 3 Corridor.
