Burnside's Canal

While attempting to take Roanoke Island, Burnside used his own ships as "shovels" to dig a canal that enabled him to utilize his entire fleet in the attack. Becasue the water was only 6 feet deep, some of the larger ships could not pass through. From Shelby Foote's three volume work "The Civil War A Narrative", page 229, "The tide running swift above the swash, they sent several of the larger ships full speed ahead to ground on the bar, and held them there with tugs and anchors while the racing current washed the sand from under their bottoms. It was a slow process, bumping them foward lenght by lenght, but it worked. By February a broad eight foot channel had been cut and the fleet assembled safely inside the sound." Thought it was an interesting tid bit of information and did not know this until recently re reading the Shelby Foote book.

Heck of an idea, since it worked! I wasn't aware of or had forgotten that episode, so thanks for bringing it up John!

Burnsides wasn't the complete idiot that a lot of folks make him out to be.....his North Carolina Expedition was an outstanding effort.

Roger That Hellboy30. Once Roanoke Island was secure under Burnside's command, the Union Army with the valuable help of the Union Navy had sealed the back door to Richmond shut according to my reading. It was a major strategic victory for the Union at this early juncture of the war.
