WW2 Dogfight Grand Final: Hawker Tempest vs. North American P-51 Mustang
It's the Grand Final: who will be crowned the champion Second World War fighter aircraft?

This one is tough. The Mustang is marginally faster, with a much higher ceiling. The Tempest on the other hand has a much greater rate of climb, and much more devastating firepower. Relative agility being an unknown, at least by me, I'm going to have to ignore the Mustang's ceiling advantage (they would both have to be at near level altitudes to engage in combat) and the clear winner then becomes the Tempest.

It's always hard to compare mid-war to late war design. I like both aircraft. I have no nationality per see to invoke as I am a dual national (English-American) so proud of both nations aircraft. I'm going to have to think more on this. If it was a matter of historical significance than Mustang runs away. Technologically speaking the Tempest is superior as it should be, but not as great a leap as one might imagine. Tough call.

Then again, he who has the height advantage dictates the terms of the battle...
Ah well, I've voted already. I'm not unhappy with my choice, I'm just not as confident as I would like, much like the P-51/Spitfire contest.

My reasoning exactly. Voted for the Tempest. Would be nice to see a WWII fighter other than the Mustang win a dogfighting contest/poll for once. Not that the P-51 wasn't a great plane, but it sometimes gets overrated a bit IMHO.

So you voted Spitfire earlier ?
Since this thread is about dogfighting I had to vote Tempest, albeit the P51 had a much greater impact on WW2.

The Tempest doesn't even make the list of top fighters.

No doubt in my mind that the P-51 takes this matchup.

Someone had better start finding some British posters to vote for the Tempest! The P-51 is just better.

I think our lads have got a bit fed up of voting in a rigged ballot!
