Early on the 17th "the Texas Brigade counterattacked Hooker's 1st Corps as they pushed Jackson's men out of the Cornfield and down the Hagerstown Pike toward the Dunker Church. The Texans pressed the Yankees through the cornfield and to the northern edge of it where Anderson's Brigade of Meade's Union division was posted. After several volleys by Anderson's yankees, the 1st Texas fell back through the Cornfield to the West Woods. The 1st Texas left their flag, 8 color-bearers and 186 of their 226 men in the Cornfield. Their 82.6% casualties was the most of any regiment of either side during the War."
This one gives me the HEEBIE-JEEBIES !

Awesome paintings!

There were three targets of choice among the shooters in a regiment:
1) anyone on a horse.
2) any artilleryman.
3) any horse in a battery.
4) any color bearer.

Ooops. That's four. Drop one and confusion ensues. Confusion is good. One might be easily expected to try to drop the guy who is shooting at you, but it is far more desirable to drop the guy on the horse, or the guy manning the gun, or the horse that can take the gun away, or the guy around which a unit is formed.

Capturing a gun was as good as capturing a flag.

Read recently, was it here, that a battery lost 70 horses. With that knd of loss, the guns could not be moved or removed. So one simply shot the horses and you got the guns. Bragging rights.

The color bearer was a death sentence. Drop him and remove the focal point of the unit.

But I digress. Undoubtedly, most combatants were concerned with repressing opposition fire.

A quaint statistic is that it took about 1000 rounds to take out one combatant. (Really broad statistic.) So, a whole bunch of lead was expended for each casualty. An entirely different perspective.

They (with their Colt Revolving Rifles) did yeoman's work helping to defend that position allowing the other 2/3 of the AotC to get back to Chattanooga.

The painting was also used on the cover of Peter Cozzens' book, This Terrible Sound as well as Dave Powell's regimental level game of the same name and his division level game Chickamauga/Chattanooga 1863. I first met Keith at a local Chicago area reenactment a few months after he completed the painting. The activities of that weekend are what escalated my personal interest in the ACW.
