WW2 Dogfight R1: Macchi C.205 vs. Lockheed P-38 Lightning

Macchi C.205

Regarded as the best Italian fighter of the war, the Veltro was capable of meeting on equal terms such renowned fighters as the North American P-51 Mustang, a capability which encouraged the Luftwaffe to use a number of these aircraft to equip one Gruppe.

Pilot Friend

Lockheed P-38 Lightning

The Lockheed P-38 Lightning was a World War II American fighter aircraft built by Lockheed. Developed to a United States Army Air Corps requirement, the P-38 had distinctive twin booms and a single, central nacelle containing the cockpit and armament. Named "fork-tailed devil" by the Luftwaffe and "two planes, one pilot" by the Japanese, this unique aircraft was used in a number of different roles including dive bombing, level bombing, ground strafing, photo reconnaissance missions, and extensively as a long-range escort fighter when equipped with drop tanks under its wings.

The P-38 was used most successfully in the Pacific Theater of Operations and the China-Burma-India Theater of Operations as the mount of America's top aces, Richard Bong (40 victories) and Thomas McGuire (38 victories). In the South West Pacific theater, the P-38 was the primary long-range fighter of United States Army Air Forces until the appearance of large numbers of P-51D Mustangs toward the end of the war. The P-38 was unusually quiet for a fighter, the exhaust muffled by the turbo-superchargers. It was extremely forgiving, and could be mishandled in many ways, but the rate of roll was too slow for it to excel as a dogfighter. The P-38 was the only American fighter aircraft in production throughout American involvement in the war, from Pearl Harbor to Victory over Japan Day.

This was a tough one, as I love the C.205. But the P-38 is one of my favorite planes of all times! Long live the Forked Tail Devil!

Hmmm, tough one. I think that the P-38 will win out in the end.

I picked the 205 but this is another match up where the pilot who can develop a tactical advantage is likely going to come out on top. The aircraft are fairly evenly matched. The P38 is a few mph faster and can fly a couple thousand feet higher; nothing decisive. Armament is close: 2x .50 cal and 2x 20mm for the 205 vs. 4x 50 cal and 1x 20mm for the P38. The 205 was the more maneuverable of the two, but that's probably the least important attribute to consider so again, nothing decisive. Two very evenly matched aircraft.

According to some the Macchi 205 was one of the best fighters in the war, the only thing that could be called a drawaback was it was in such pitifal low numbers.

Macchi 205 for me

Such a hard choice. Worst than P-51 vs FW 190!!!

The P-38 is such a great airplane, flown by both USAAF leading aces (Bong and McGuire). I even have a Bong's P-38 "Marge" (named after his wife) as one of my few aircraft model I built and kept in my home office to this day.

Technically, from a performance and armament (with 20mm guns) pov, the M.C205 is such a superior aircraft...It even has a Daimler Benz engine...I'm glad the Italians only developped this aircraft at the end of the war!

Wow! Whichever one I choose is not going to be an easy decision!

The C 202 would lose to a 38 but the 205 is a different animal. It is as good or better than a P-51 and would be all over a P 38 like stink on ....

I like the 205, but I have to go with the Lightning. It was one of the few aircraft that flew through the war. The P-38 was a great aircraft in many roles. probably its weakest was in the air to air role. It did kill a bunch of more maneuverable fighters in the Pacific. When it did not show a great superiority in Europe they used it photo-recon. In the Med it was used in ground attack and long range fighter. This was the only fighter that could help the British when they tried to take the Dodecanese Islands from the Italians. This campaign fell apart when they took the P-38's away. Give me a P-38L any day.
