Need advice on Squad Battles

I played Tour of Duty when it first came out. The level of detail was very good, but I found the gameplay to be rather dull because the lack of mobility made maneuver very difficult.

Coming back to computer wargaming after quite a few years, I see that there are a lot of new titles using that system, covering some very interesting periods.

Are the new versions much different than Tour of Duty?

Where are reliable reviews to be found?

If I go back to the Squad Battles system, what would be a good game to pick up first?

I was thinking about buying one (before buying CombatMission Normandy):

Red Victory could be an interesting choice. Lot of tanks and weapons to use. And som modders are working on it already:

It does look good. I'm putting in on the 'to-buy' list.

Thanks!

Squad Battle Mods

I have many of the games in the Squad Battles series and find pbm particularly addictive. I'd suggest picking up the titles that interest you - you can't go wrong.

They all play and feel a little different from each other (reflective of the conflict and
technologies they depict).

Tour of Duty can feel like a hard slog through the jungles - particularly when you're on foot (which is most of the time) and traversing uphill through jungle/wooded terrain - but then again that's kinda what it was like apparently.

I like that I can learn about conflicts that are not often depicted at this scale: First World War, Korean War, Soviet Afghan War, etc.

If you're looking for graphics enhancements for Tour of Duty, Vietnam, Modern War, Pacific War, etc, feel free to check out my blog where I host several squad battle mods that I am actively working on (Will also have my first Ancient Warfare mods soon).

There are some massive battles in First World War too. Great game.

I just completed a graphics enhancement package for that:
