A production contract for the Badger infantry fighting vehicle for the South African National Defence Force has been approved and is currently with Armscor, which will send it out to industry.

According to Dr Sam Gulube, Secretary for Defence, the Badger production contract under Project Hoefyster was approved in February this year. He said he hoped to see the first production Badger vehicle roll off the assembly line by the end of 2013 and the last in 2023.

Up until recently the programme was in the development phase. Gulube said the approval of the production phase, worth R8 billion over the next ten years, had been taken to Armscor. “Right now Armscor is contracting production and ensuring local production etc. I don’t know where they are today,” he told journalists last week.

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) troops currently serving with the United Nations mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (Monusco) will become part of the new UN intervention brigade that will combat M23 rebels.

Dr Sam Gulube, Secretary for Defence, said last week that the South African troops in the DRC are currently part of the Monusco deployment, but will be moved into the intervention brigade. He said that moving them from peacekeeping to peace enforcement will “change the dynamics of the DRC conflict.”

“We are going to use the same number of troops in the intervention brigade,” as the SANDF has with Monusco, Gulube said. He told journalists that South Africa had since July 2012 been finalising a memorandum of understanding with the United Nations that will allow South African troops to be transferred to the intervention brigade, which for the first time in UN history has an offensive mandate, against armed groups threatening peace in the DRC. The intervention brigade will focus its main energy on combating the M23 rebel group in the eastern DRC.

Gulube said that SANDF officers had been sent to Brazil to train in jungle warfare ahead of the deployment to the DRC, as the SANDF would most definitely encounter jungle warfare conditions.

Close on 3 000 military professionals and others involved in various aspects of peace missions have to date benefitted from the skills training offered by the SA National Defence Force’s (SANDF’s) Peace Mission Training Centre (PMTC).

The Centre’s mission was set out by then SANDF Human Resources Chief Lieutenant General Derrick Mgwebi (now Joint Operations Chief) when he officially took it into service in 2007. He told guests at the event that the PMTC would prepare SANDF and Department of Defence (DoD) members, as well as officials from other government departments, for peace support operations to enhance South Africa’s contributions to peacekeeping, peace-making and peace building missions on the continent.

Establishment of the PMTC was in line with an agreement entered into between then Defence Minister, Mosiuoa Lekota, and United Kingdom Defence Secretary Des Browne. The agreement saw the UK contributing R2.3 million to the PMTC.

The total cost of setting up the PMTC was R30 million, with contributions coming from South Africa, the United States and Canada in addition to the United Kingdom funding.

More proof of the value add provided by the Reserve Force to meeting SA National Defence Force (SANDF) operational commitments comes from Major General Roy Andersen, Chief: Defence Reserves.

More than 14 200 Reserves were called up for duty in the 2012/13 financial year for an average of 61 days each.

“The Infantry Formation made 30 Reserve companies available for deployment in external peace support operations and a further 28 companies were deployed for border protection,” Andersen said, adding that all four arms of service were making “extensive and effective use” of Reserves.

The wider utilisation of Reserve Force elements in support of the full-time component of the SANDF has been welcomed by SA Army Chief, Lieutenant General Vusi Masondo.

“There is now an awareness of the Reserves as an integral part of the Army in terms of the One Force approach, as never before. This is entirely due to the fact that Reserves are playing an important role in the Army despite all the limiting factors against the rebuilding of the Reserves,” he said.

South African National Defence Force (SANDF) Chief: Reserves Major General Roy Andersen used a visit to two World War One memorials in France to remind leaders that peace only lasts until the next war and that steps have to be taken to meet any threat at any given moment.

He was speaking on July 7 at the Deville Wood Memorial, the site of what he called “a place that witnessed so terrible a testing of the human spirit under conditions so frightful over so long an unbroken period of time to which young South African volunteer soldiers were subjected”.

Andersen also visited the Arques-la-Bataille cemetery during what has become an annual pilgrimage for him.

Referring to the hallowed ground of Delville Wood he said it was “doubly hallowed by virtue not only of the fact that over 600 of those young men who fought and died here, still lie unburied within the confines of the wood, now made lovely again by its regrown trees, but also because here stands the only national memorial to the 25 000 volunteers of all races who died while serving in the South African forces during two World Wars, the Korean conflict, the Struggle for Freedom and more recent peace support missions”.

Recalling the Battle of Delville Wood, he said events started on July 15, 1916, when three battalions of young men marched out of trenches two hours before dawn with orders to hold the Wood at all costs. It ended six days later when five officers and 750 men marched out. They were the survivors of a brigade that numbered 3 032 men and 121 officers.

Johannesburg - The South African and US armed forces will conduct a joint exercise in the Eastern Cape, the SA National Defence Force said on Thursday.

SA Navy Captain Jaco Theunissen said the militaries would share technical expertise during the exercise, which would start on July 24 and end on August 5, and would involve 5000 soldiers.

Haha, Johannesburg-in this futuristic story I'm writing, a fictional company I mention is called "Johannesburg Military Technologies" and the particular piece of their hardware I will write about is the "Nivea" tank-I did a bit of research into South/southern African wildlife and supposedly Nivea is a name for a very dangerous/venomous kind of snake?

Expect more optimism among especially South African delegates when the business side of the 2013 Land Forces Africa conference starts in Pretoria tomorrow.

By and large, this optimism will be ascribed to imminent finalisation of the contract that will see production of the long-awaited new infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) for the SA Army.

Speaking ahead of the continent’s single largest military conference aimed specifically at landward forces, Denel Land Systems (DLS) chief executive Stephan Burger said engagement was “currently underway with Armscor as regards finalisation of the contract for the production of IFVs as determined by project Hoefyster”.

He points out the contract is of “great significance, not only for Denel but for the South African defence industry”.

It was a packed Naval Chapel that bade final farewell to Vice-Admiral Lambert Jackson "Woody" Woodburne DVR, SD, SM, South African Navy (Retired).

Woodburne, who served as Chief of the South African Navy (SAN) from 1 July 1990 to 31 August 1992, passed away in Cape Town on 5 July 2013 after a long illness. The funeral service was held in the Dockyard Chapel, Simon’s Town on Thursday.

Born on 13 July 1939 in Kimberley, Woodburne is only one of two people to have received the Van Riebeeck Decoration, then the second highest medal of valour.

A contingent of 20 US marines arrives in Simon’s town on Saturday to begin preparation in earnest for next week’s joint Exercise Shared Accord.

When in full swing in Eastern Cape as well as the sea off the province it is envisaged some 5 000 troops will be active in the joint SA National Defence Force (SANDF)/United States Armed Forces (USAF) exercise. The exercise proper is set to start on July 24 and end on August 5.

The American marines will be using their time at the SA Navy fleet headquarters to practice drills and exchange amphibious doctrine with the South African equivalent, the Maritime Reaction Squadron (MRS). This will also include a beach landing at Long Beach next Monday. With three days of joint intensive training and rehearsals completed the Marines and their South African counterparts will board SAS Spioenkop for transit to Port Elizabeth.
