Very nice pics! I would imagine SA's army would revolve around highly mobile forces for rapid deployment? Considering what's happening in the continent, is the Army currently conducting special training for bio warfare?

Mainly motrised infantry but there is lare rapid recastion force being planed and as of now a 1500 strong recastion force.

Normal NBCD training but there are a few units that specolice in it. The South African Miltary Health Serves does have a specliced NBCD unit.

Speciol force and the other branches that support them can deploy rather fast. And SA can deploy faster in africa than any other african and many forghine countries.

Needless to say, I am green with envy.

Why.

Your army is much larger though we have more AFV

Our airforce is better of and for the size of the army bigger but your army also has a air wing.

And I wish we could have as many ships as you guys do.

Quote:
The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) is expected to soon place a contingent on standby for short-notice deployments within the framework of the African Capacity for Immediate Response to Crises (ACIRC).

As one of the countries pushing for this capability to bridge the gap until the much-delayed African Standby Force can become effective, South Africa is thought to have agreed to have a contingent on standby from December, a little later than the originally intended date of 1 October.

It is still unclear how long the standby periods are intended to be. Originally, periods were thought to be three months, but it is dependant on how many countries can make forces available.

The Chief of the South African Army, Lieutenant General Vusi Masondo, has provided some details of the composition of what will be a joint combat group with a strength of more than 1,500 personnel.

The army will provide a motorised infantry battalion (9 SA Infantry Battalion equipped with Casspir armoured personnel carriers); a composite mechanised car squadron (Ratel-20 infantry combat vehicles from 1 SA Infantry Battalion, Rooikat armoured cars and possibly Ratel-ZT3 tank destroyers from 1 Special Services Battalion); a light artillery battery (1 Light Artillery Regiment with 120 mm mortars); a light anti-aircraft battery (10 Anti-Aircraft Regiment with Starstreak missiles); a troop from 2 Field Engineer Regiment; a troop from 1 Tactical Intelligence Regiment; and a composite signals squadron with elements of 1, 2 and 5 Signals Regiments, including communications intelligence teams. Most of the force elements will be equipped with Casspirs.

The South African Air Force (SAAF) will provide a mobile air operations team (MAOT), two Gripen multirole fighters, two Rooivalk attack helicopters, two Oryx medium transport helicopters, two A-109 light utility helicopters, and two C-130s.

Quote:
Two questions remain unanswered: how this force is to be deployed, sustained, and, if necessary, reinforced or extracted, given the SANDF's limited airlift and total lack of sealift, and what will happen if another country does not follow up the SANDF's ACIRC deployment. In particular, the already over-stretched army cannot sustain any extended deployment in addition to those in Darfur and the DRC and along South Africa's borders.

Two soldiers from 4 SA Infantry Battalion at Middelburg, Mpumalanga, were wounded during an ambush on a hybrid AU/UN peacekeeping force near Kutum in the northern Darfur region of Sudan earlier this week.

The ambush was on a section dispatched from the South African battalion base to collect water.

The two wounded soldiers were airlifted by helicopter to the UN hospital at el Fashir and were earlier today “stable” according to Captain (SAN) Jaco Theunissen, SA National Defence Force (SANDF) Joint Operations Division operational communication officer.

Two other South African infantrymen who sustained minor juries during the ambush are back at the Kutum base and in good spirits, he added.

"Had it not been for the swift reaction, high standard of alertness and vigilance of the SANDF members, it could have been a different story," said Battalion Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Andries Matlaila

One of the two 4 SA Infantry Battalion soldiers wounded during an ambush at Kutum in Sudan late last month has been moved to a SA Military Health Services (SAMHS) hospital for further care and treatment.

“He sustained severe injuries during the firefight and will receive the correct level of treatment in South Africa,” Captain (SAN) Jaco Theunissen of SANDF Joint Operations said adding it was in the patient’s interest that his location not be made public.

Well, our Air Force is composed primarily of a bunch of aging Hueys, some OV10 bronco, and a couple or so C130. Our navy has only a few ships, none even missile armed. Our army has old light tanks and some old APCs, and that's about the extent of it. What I am proud of though are our special forces. But, speaking of hardware, we're nowhere near SA.

It is true SA has a lot of good hardware. I mean compared to our size we have a surpless of IFV.

South Africa has a much larger economy than the Philippines. That is why the SA Military has more equipment and better aircraft.

Interesting that the SADF is keeping to 6X6 fighting vehicles.

The Canadian Army went from 6X6 (Grizzly, Cougar) to 8X8 (Bison, Coyote, LAV3)...We found that the extra set of wheels made a world of difference in terms of speed and maneuvering, especially in all-terrain and winter conditions.

we switched to 8x8 with the bager and rooikat. We will be buying new or refurbishing our 4x4 and 6x6 APCs and trucks. Though I suspect we could retain a large number of upgraded 6x6 Ratel IFV in a upgraded form for years to come.
