Here are the American equivalents of van Rompuy, seen in acute mental distress after losing to Trump-

No White House for them, this house is far more suitable-

How about it Norman?

Except - Herman "Redemptor Hominis" Van Rompuy, as he is called here, never lost an election in his life.

Never !

I must admit that Von Rompuy seems to be just about the only top table eu body with no stink attached to him, he seems to be guilty of nothing more than greed, something to which all eu mandarins are susceptible and not in itself necessarily a bad thing.

What are his good points Snowy, do you really hold him in such high esteem?

Aren't you a bit annoyed with him for hauling Belgium out of a political crisis only to run off to eu headquarters thus letting Belgium sink?

Van Rompuy never lost an election, he also never won an election, because he never fought an election : he never led his party , he was PM of a coalition government during one year ,and the PM of a coalition government is not the chief of such a government .

You had to hear his comment after Brexit : these old English : how dare they not to follow the other European countries, committing suicide, in the search for the new Utopia, where there would be no longer Britains, but only Europeans obeying humbly the ukases from Brussels .

Brexit shattered the illusions of this would-be Metternich .

Oh we know all that, we know the French and many others viewed us as no more than a dull witted cash cow for 4 decades, this is nothing new.

Was Rompuy not elected by Belgians then, was he simply appointed by what passed for a Belgian government at that time?

I was kind of under the impression that Belgium was sans parliament and in deep doo doo until he came along and at least helped to pull her irons out of the fire only to run off to eu headquarters when a much better paid job came along thus dropping his nation back in the mire.

Kind of sad the British public is so misinformed about anything that goes on in the non-English speaking parts of the world, even just across the channel...

Belgium was never "sans parliament" - it was "sans federal government" which was no accident and suited us just fine, only the financial markets got their knickers in a tangle and started driving interest rates up, so we cobbled one together.

This had nothing to do with VR though, who was for all intents and purposes already retired when he was called by his party to become Belgian PM (after the fall of the sitting, cobbled-together cabinet mentioned above in 2009).

It was no secret he was an unwilling PM though, in a government he hadn't negotiated himself - so when they practically begged him to become EU chairman (and guaranteed him a majority) he saw a honourable way out.

Compared to Belgian politics, EU politics is child's play, and I guess Blair en co figured that whoever can keep a Belgian government together will have no trouble with the EU

Hope this helps.

Yeah, I was gonna say, from what I remember the Belgian economy was actually doing quite well during that period - it was something a lot of anarchists and libertarians as a humorous example of how there can be quite a lot of benefits when there is less government getting in the way trying to justify a paycheck.

The Belgian federal government is really superfluous, all important issues are dealt with at the regional level, even then, there was always a federal government of running affairs and a functioning federal parliament.

It was in the aftermath of the banking crisis though and financial markets were very sensitive, at one point short term interest rates rose above 7%, whereupon the Belgian government issued public bonds at 4 and raised 5.7 billion in two weeks.

Interest rates have been near zero since.

Belgium is basically our own hedge fund
