India & U.S.

Why is India important to the U.S.I realize China wants good relations with India because they want access to the Indian Ocean.

We go around trying to set up democratic governments in places that don't what them. India all ready is and it's also the largest. IF China is a treat, IF, then India would be nice to have on our side.

The U.S has one of the highest approval ratings among the Indian populace(About 85% during Bush's tenure), India is a huge market for U.S exports, Indians and Americans share many common values including civil rule, secularism, democracy and human rights. In the future India could be a potential military partner. In 2011 India was the 3rd largest importer of U.S defence equipment and in 2012 the figure will far surpass those of 2011.

On the contrary India is very suspicious of Chinese Naval presence in the Indian ocean- The Chinese do have a huge share of the export market in India.

The problem with India being our "friend" is that they are independent and won't always walk in lockstep with us, sort of like France. Good for them!

In addition to being a very large and very important country in its own right, the Indian Ocean is a critical avenue of world trade and the Indian landmass sits right in the middle of it. Ignoring India is not an option.

I don't know about the having "common values" with the US, but India would make for a nice proxy for the US if, IF, there's a need for a proxy war.

It is all national interests. The reason why our relationship has suffered over the years with India is they have let Soviet influence in and we have supported Pakistan. Now Pakistan is imploding a bit and we are NOT getting along well with them. It is in India's best interest to be friendly with the US.

India shares a border with China. There has been battles fought there. China does support Pakistan politically and with military sales. Therefor India will disagree with Chinese aims.

India has a long term goal to control the area of the Indian Ocean. India is the 350 pound Gorilla of the neighborhood! The smaller states need to balance this by bringing in bigger countries!

Plus India is a democracy and their peoples' enjoy free speech. (and in English- usually).
That has to be worth something.

Not to comment on the state of democracy in that country, but when were those prerequisites for US aid or cooperation? As amply stated by others, the US can and do give aid when it suits them.

Good point, especially when viewed in the context of the philosophy: "He may be a Son-of-a-Bitch, but he's OUR Son-of a-Bitch", when speaking of some useful tyrant.

Still, it must be easier to rally public opinion if one can point- with a slight semblance of truth- that a country subscribes, officially , to "Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness".

hehe... agreed!

I must say I'm quite surprised the US-India "cooperation" has so far been a bit relatively low-profile.

Not likely, you really can't do that with a nation that has 4 times as many people as you do.
The USSR tried to do that with China, and they still despise each other.

Not a nation on Earth has not done that sort of thing.

The US-Indian connection is hard to trace, it seems to have grown from commerce and talking over the phone. Odd as it sounds, all those out-sourced phone centers left the Indians with a high opinion of how patient and courteous Americans can be.
Guess that still counts for something in some parts of the world... glad I didn't mess that up too badly

But, I guess that the biggest factor would be the simplest; no conflicting interests.
