Dam breaks in northeast Japan, washes away homes: Kyodo

AFP | Mar 11, 2011, 09.42pm IST
TOKYO: A dam in Japan's northeast Fukushima prefecture broke and homes were washed away, Kyodo news reported on Saturday, after the biggest earthquake in the nation's history wreaked death and havoc. The 8.9-magnitude quake - the seventh biggest ever recorded - generated a monster wall of water that pulverised the northeastern city of Sendai, where police reportedly said that 200-300 bodies had been found on the coast.

At least 310 people were killed in the massive earthquake and following tsunamis, police and press reports said.

The government declared an atomic power emergency as officials rushed to secure key nuclear facilities in the affected regions.

Hours after the quake struck with devastating force, TV images showed huge orange balls of flame rolling up into the night sky as fires raged around a petrochemical complex in Sendai.

A massive fire also engulfed an oil refinery in Iichihara near Tokyo.

Russia vows aid as feud islands hit by tsunami

# AFP
# March 12, 2011 12:00AM (Australian time)

Quote:
MOSCOW: President Dmitry Medvedev last night offered Russia's assistance to Tokyo following a huge earthquake and tsunami in Japan, as waves reached islands at the heart of the two countries' territorial dispute.

"Of course we are ready to help our neighbours overcome the consequences of this very difficult earthquake," Mr Medvedev told a government meeting.

...

Earlier yesterday, Russia declared a tsunami warning for the Kuril Island chain and ordered the evacuation of 11,000 people.

The first waves reached the Kuril chain's southernmost islands, which are at the heart of Russia's long-running territorial feud with Japan.

...

Mr Medvedev said the government should ensure all measures were taken to prevent any possible deaths and damage in Russia following the natural disaster.

The first report I heard on CNN said that 3 people had been confirmed killed........I don't know why they would even bother to report such a silly number given the devastating images we were seeing at the same time on our TVs.

I've just heard that one train was derailed and 3 trains are 'missing'. Missing? .................That's puzzling.

Here's aid offers to Japan, so far.

* President Obama said the United States stood "ready to help the Japanese people in this time of great trial." The Defense Department said it was preparing American forces in the Pacific to provide earthquake and tsunami relief.

Pentagon spokeswoman Navy Commander Leslie Hullryde said the U.S. military effort included at least six U.S. Navy ships but said defense officials have not yet received a request for assistance from the Japanese government.

* The United Nations said 30 international search and rescue teams were on alert to go to Japan to provide assistance.

* South Korea is initially sending 40 emergency rescue officials who are on standby to fly in by government plane when they get clearance, its foreign ministry said.

* Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said Russia was ready to provide emergency aid. "Russia is ready to offer Japan all possible aid to cope with the aftermath of this tragedy," Medvedev said in a statement on the Kremlin's official website.

* Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said Beijing was ready to provide Japan with necessary assistance to deal with the aftermath of the devastating natural disaster, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

* Thailand will offer 5 million baht ($165,000) aid to Japan and will consider giving more when the extent of the damage is known, Thai Foreign Ministry spokesman Thani Thongpakdi said.

* British Foreign Secretary William Hague said Britain was in contact with the Japanese government and he has asked the country's ambassador in Tokyo to offer all assistance. ($1=30.37 Baht)

More nations offer aid to Japan...

* Switzerland said it had offered to send aid to Japan. A team of humanitarian experts are ready to leave at short notice.

* Australia's Deputy Prime Minister Wayne Swan said his country was ready to "assist Japan in any way at this difficult time", adding that its embassy was "urgently" contacting authorities to see if any nationals had been affected.

* South Korea also expressed its sympathy and pledged "every possible support" to help Japan recover, adding that around 40 rescue workers had been put on standby to head to the quake-hit nation.

* The Philippines, which was hit by small tsunami waves, said it was anxiously waiting for word on the condition of nearly a quarter million of its citizens living near the epicentre of the quake.

President Benigno Aquino offered his sympathy to Japan and pledged any assistance within the government's capability, recalling Tokyo's unstinting help in the Philippines' own struggles with natural disasters.

* India conveyed sympathies and condolences to victims as well as offering assistance.

"We are saddened by the loss of life and extensive damage to property and infrastructure," the Indian foreign ministry said in a statement, adding that there were no reports of casualties among the 25,000 Indians in Japan.

Letters of sympathy with offers of assistance had been sent to Japan's prime minister and foreign minister, the statement said.

* In Sri Lanka, President Mahinda Rajapakse said Japan was a "very close and dear friend" and its people possessed "incredible resilience and courage" to overcome destruction.

* Pakistan's Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani also said his country was ready to help.

I wonder how it's going to be for our coast.

I know Pacifica is one of the few cities on the list for mandatory evacuations. Pacifica schools and most businesses are closed.

They were prepared, they are organized, they are not blaming the world, and they won't start stealing aid money and attacking the international help teams because "the USA are invading" and "the red cross is spreading diseases". Like Haiti did.

Three heading towards Tokyo and one heading out.

They must be submerged somewhere. How can they not see 4 passenger trains?

I saw footage today of the water advancing and submerging houses, bringing them down and dragging them. There was so much debris on top of the water, that while the wave was moving inwards, the crap piling up on the surface was high enough that it was on fire. Still burning, while moving around on top of the water...
I can't be surprised they can't find a train, if it got caugh it got separated and thrown all over the place.
