Don't think you used enough dynamite there

Butch Cassidy would never have made this mistake !

Wouldn't want to have to go in there and set new charges - wonder how stable those walls are now.

Cool

That must be so embarrassing for the demo company. Also, very dangerous to have to go back in and reset the charges...

Ah, it's Detroit... What's one more unsafe, abandoned building in a city full of unsafe, abandoned buildings?

At the time of Napoleon when a French version of Sealion was anticipated defensive works called Martello Towers were built on the Channel coast. Oval in shape with a big gun on a rotating mount on top they were intended to block beach exits long enough for reinforcements to arrive. They were made of brick (with very thick walls). Over a hundred years later it was decided to demolish them. Well they're only made of brick and we now have dynamite right? Wrong - attempts to dynamite them had no impact. Today many have been converted into very expensive residences and nobody has been able to recover the long lost secret of how to fire such incredibly hard bricks.

The US Army conducted an evaluation of artillery versus brick fortresses during the Civil War. Captain Quincy Gillmore (General Sherman's chief engineer) was put in charge of this and used Fort Pulaski as the example.

At roughly a mile (1,650 to 1,740 yards) rifled artillery performed as follows:

30 pdr Parrott = 18"
64 pdr James = 20"
84 pdr James = 26"
8" Columbiad = 11"
10" Columbiad = 13"

It was found that solid shot and percussion shell had about equal effect, the shell not penetrating quite as deep but leaving a broader crater than shot.

Gillmore stated that rifled artillery spelled the end of brick forts.
