Requesting help from French forumists - Algerian War

Could the French members of the forum help me out by recommending some military history books on the Algerian War?

I've made a selection of four books so far:

Militaires et guérilla dans la guerre d'Algérie

Guerre d'Algérie - La bataille des frontières

Guerre d'Algérie

Histoire militaire de la guerre d'Algérie

Could a moderator please move the thread to the Africa or Europe section of the forum, please (Africa would be the more appropriate location I guess)? For more exposure in hope of a reply. Many thanks!

Have you checked Alistair Horne's bibliography in A Savage War of Peace: Algeria 1954-1962?

No, does it include books by French authors?

I'll go ahead and order the books I've selected, I just thought the French users might recommend something.

Might want to just re-do the thread in the appropriate forum, mods seem not to be too active here. Or french members.

I would suggest Albert Camu's The First Man. Not about the war or even the period in question, but an interesting read nonetheless about pre-WW2 Algeria. Unfortunately, absolutely nothing else springs to mind on the subject.

The bibliography is replete with French authors and memoirs. It is a very good source book to launch a study or research of available French sources.

And it is both a good read (as most of Horne's book invariably are)
and well researched.

J-J Servan-Schreiber's "Lieutnant en Algerie" (1957) perhaps? One of the first journalists to tell the story of what was going on in that war.

In addition to the ones listed above, I've always been intrigued by General Bigeard's experience. He wrote "Ma Guerre d'Algérie"... (My Algerian War) published 1995.

I found General Paul Aussaresses' insights in his book The Battle of the Casbah very useful as a military intelligence officer for what it takes to deal with counterinsurgency.

Bigeard, Aussaresses and Massu.....had these three men been given the Carte Blanche, they could have destroyed FLN and pacified Algeria in less than a month.

It is my take that military the war was won by France;
but that France lost the war in the political arena.

More or less true. It was Gen. de Gaulle who saw the political ramifications of retaining the three northern provinces of Algeria as departments, and realized it was an impossibility. It would have required ethnic cleansing of the Arab populace to ensure a permanent Pied-Noir majority and thus keeping the French national Assembly intact, without which an Assembly with Muslim representation powerful enough to affect rule of law in the home country would have been unacceptable. If Algeria almost caused a civil war on France....having a Muslim majority in the Assembly would have ignited it instantly.

Nevertheless, just before the political situation began to reverse itself, I've read that - in general terms - French forces had pretty destroyed FLN in the field and controlled almost 90%-95% of the country.

What is amusing, is many Americans lose no time in portraying Algeria as a loss for France, but reserving America's role in Vietnam with the distinction of having military successes which were lost by the politicians.....despite that the parallels between the two conflicts being astonishingly close.
