This was the S-6 submarine of "Srednyaya" ("Medium") class.

Here's another article about it. Of course, Daily Mail chose the much juicier unofficial nickname "Stalinets". Another stunning discovery the journalists made is that it was built in Stalingrad instead of Leningrad.
Although the S-class was the most successful class of all Soviet WW2 submarines, this particular sub was quite unlucky. It didn't sink a single ship and lost a few people to a German air attack a month before going on its last mission.
