Pope Francis and Patriarch Kirill to meet in Cuba

It's in the news. They'll both stop in Cuba, meet at the airport, and make a joint statement. It doesn't seem a lot, but it's actually historic.

And to think that not a lot of time ago, this was being ruled out:

Ruled out...

Given that the Great Schism has been going a mere 1,000 years or so seems a mite precipitous!

The irony is that it appears that the persecution of Christians in places like Syria has been the catalyst so that Daesh may have actually played a part in uniting Chrisendom - an unanticipated consequence one suspects.

The schism has been going on for so long, yes, and it's not like they're going to patch it up now or quickly. But the meeting is far from having been organized precipitously. They've been working at it behind the scenes for a long time.

Only thing making me scratch my head is that it's the head of the Russian Orthodox church meeting to discuss ending the schism. The Russian Patriarchiate didn't exist when the schism happened - not sure Moscow existed in 1054 although Kiev Rus - the "ancestor state" of the Eastern Slavs had already adopted Orthodoxy. I would have thought the Patriarch of Constantinople (who has also met with the Pope) would be the one - although on the other hand the Russian Church is by far the largest if the Orthodox Churches and they enjoy state support (if not actually a state church as in Greece). Still good for them, it clearly is in response to the persecution of Christians in the Middle East.

Hey guys, I feel a sense of 'family' responsibility coming on, since one of my 27th great grandfathers was 'Saint Basil'/Vladimir I
'The Great', Prince of Novgorod, King of the Kievian Rus, who after having led a very 'colourful' life as a pagan, became a Christian in the Eastern traditition, and then proceeded to consolidate 'Russia' from the Black Sea to the Baltic and securing its eastern and western boundaries AND in Christianing the regions. In addition one of my 61st great grandfathers was Emperor Constantine 'The Great', who was central to the 'Christianisation' of the Roman Empire, both East and West.

Sorry about the split guys, it really came down to politics rather than religion.

First thing, most of the Orthodox churches have autocephaly, and while they are in communion with Constantinople and the latter is or should be their primus inter pares, it might be hypothetically conceivable that one of those autocephalous churches decides on its own to end the schism - for itself, naturally.

But that's merely theoretical. It would mean the end of the schism is at least a subject up for discussion. I doubt it really is. What I'd guess is up for discussion is some step to make the relationship a bit less frosty. Which would already be a big step in the right direction. All considered, the fact alone that they meet at all already is good news. And that's why I thought it was worth a thread.
