The chart that I 'googled' was from the US Department of Transportation. It clearly refutes your claim regarding the 'bulk of land transport by ton' being by rail. Rail isn't even first, never mind the 'bulk', by any measure. You started the entire thread about trains in a zombie apocalypse scenario. Now you've repeatedly accused me of being 'obsessed' with trains? I wasn't even the first one in the thread to suggest a WW Z wall scaling type of problem. But I guess you just posted this thread to have others lavish you with praise over your 'brilliant' train idea, and have no tolerance for contrary opinions.
I already posting my response.

But thanks for kow-towing.

Good point. But there are limits to trains as well. There will be line blockages, either vehicles driven on to the line or passenger and cargo trains that stopped in place on the tracks when their crews and passengers turned. Also with traind even assuming that the line is clear. You need to access every set of points down the route your wanting to take to make sure that they are open for your journey.

Thats going to mean securing every signal box or Central control room. Sorry I don't know how the rail system works in the US.

To secure each one might take more men then you would think.

I know points in the UK can be worked manually at a junction. But that means getting out of the train to work them.

Seriously if we are talking about the US then getting the mississipi working again gives you a cheap for of access to a massive part of your country that would be hard to equal by any other form of transport.

You can establish a fortified perimeter, even a castle-like one with moats etc., around your airbase. What's in between bases is largely irrelevant.
You use aerial reconnaissance to identify pockets of zombies, identify resources to be acquired, and even attack zombies.

For ground operations you use a phalanx of bulldozers or other similar heavy machinery that scrapes, impales, crushes, and otherwise lays waste to all zombies in its path. You grab the resources you want and withdraw or establish a new fortified base at that site.
Having a few helicopters available gives you the means to rescue isolated survivors identified by the aircraft on scouting missions.

Trains require a rail system and can only go where the rails go. The rails themselves require maintenance and that exposes work crews to zombies. The trains while capable of moving a massive amount of materials would also require maintenance.
A better choice for secondary transportation to the fortified air base is the fortified port. Whether on a river or coast it allows ships to move between them in total safety (last time I checked zombies could neither swim or operate something like a warship).

I'd think minimizing intrusion into "Zombie country" would be the ticket.
Have you read Even ZOmbie Kilelrs Get The Blues? That sounds eerily like their plan.

The real question is, what do we do with the voodoo priest once we catch him/her?
Someone has to be controlling/making these zombies.

No, but zombie killing seems rather straight forward to me. It isn't like zombies are really good at tactics and strategy...

Main thing, seems to me, is to do more than just stab them in the frontal lobe (looking at you, Walking Dead! lol), for that exact reason...Zombies aren't known for their intellectual thinking anyways. Also not the temporal lobes...as they aren't known for great oration anyways!
