I thought about that. But out on the Great Plans, where it will be operating, diesel is more common than trees.

Of course the other concern is derailment... it only need to happen once to ruin your whole day.

I've seen trains hit cows, and that didn't seem to cause that much loss of friction. I expect zombies would have a declining hydration level as they age.

Plus I envision the train ala a aircraft carrier: it stands off at a distance and discharges its ground vehicles to deal with any risk.

Whats the range of a diesel locomotive? I'm calculating 2,366 km per tank. Is that right? But I'm assuming that is with average load, not hundreds of bodies stacked on it and having to plow through various obstacles. Not to mention any hills. So refueling stations would have to be set up every so many miles. These would be where there is a danger of being taken out. A fuel depot crawling with zombies would be a big issue. Where will you take the survivors you find? What kind of communications will be on board? Definitely need to look into onboard biodiesel production or some kind of way to produce it from raw materials harvested from around. A place like NORAD could be perfect.

As to refueling, two simple options: areas under government control, or simply add a tanker car. A Freight loco won't even notice the weight, and a military pumping system and some hoses would give more range than there is country.

Hundreds of bodies isn't any sort of burden. First line freight units can pull massive amounts. The fact is you can't pack enough Human bodies into a car to even approach its weight limit.

The scenario I'm looking at has a train with (6 cars) flatbed-mounted deployable units (two twenty-man sections each in three M35 cargo trucks), a (4 cars) transport section with four trucks for moving cargo and people, tanker car, flatbed for refueling pump and other systems, eight boxcars for salvage storage, eight AMTRAK-style coaches for evacuating people, one boxcar for unit supplies, and a flatbed supporting C3 vans.

That's 30 cars. Without loot and people its about 35% of the loco's pull capacity. Figure 60-70% weight fully loaded. Add a second loco, and you still have enough onboard fuel to tour the USA to your heart's content.

I'm trying to establish whether flatbed cars are strong enough, or could be reinforced enough, to support the use of mortars or even 105mm howitzers.

Armored trains in the Russian Civil War and WW2 provided artillery support, but I'm having trouble getting specifics.

Depends on the flatbed. Some of them sure. Especially if you grabbed some of the tank transporter flatbeds. Of which there should be a few on major military bases, and maybe in certain railyards. Those can easily hold 70+ tons. Should be configurable to handle a battery of 4 x 120mm mortars onboard, with walls built up to protect against Zombies. Maybe only 2 per car, with some space built in for crews to sleep or fight with small arms, and store ammo.

Will there be an AMTRAK dining car in there too?

Then again, that thing will run out of food between stops...

Most definitely. But locomotives have sanders. Might not be good enough for zombie guts though.

Dedicated passenger locomotives may be required(for power and heat) depending on the passenger cars used.

Note the boxcar for supplies. While rescued subjects will be dropped off in various safe zones, the cargo capacity involved would keep troops and any recuses eating basic foods longer than the train has range.

And the train has a lot of range.

As to the zombie herd/traction issue, remember that the locust swarms extended for miles. A freight train moving at 40mph with say 50% of its cargo pull weight will punch through a Woodstock-sized crowd on momentum and the rear path of the train still having traction. By the time the rear part starts losing traction the front will regain traction.

So you would have to have a dense herd of zombies standing on the tracks for 3.5 times the length of the train for it to have a chance of working.

Not impossible, but not too common a danger, I think.

I'm now research ultra light planes to see if it is practical to include one. Aerial recon of urban areas, bridges, and the like would seem to alleviate the issue.

Put a backup engine at the other end.....run it out of gear unless you need it.....then you can use it to push or pull if you need to.

A fast moving train won't lose traction. It would be a problem for starting though.
