One question regarding destruction of railroad at Italian front.
I read in memoirs of one Serbian intelligence officer who went to Italy in 1946, that some railroad lines were not yet repaired, because Germans took with them both tracks and sleepers, allegedly with some machine that could lift entire section with sleepers (like modern track-laying machines).
I know of railroad plough (we have one in Belgrade war museum), and I saw video of it in action, but this is completely new to me.
Are there any info that Germans took both tracks and sleepers with them on some places in order to destroy railroad, or even used machine that could do it in single piece?

Found this link to the Operations Planning Division concerning logistical planning for the ETO. Figured you guys would find it interesting for comparison purposes.

Please don't take it the wrong way if I don't thank you for Rep points. To be perfectly honest, I'm not on these boards to collect them, although they are appreciated :)

Thanks for the ASF 'Planing Division' link. I have a hell of a reading list for the summer now.

Removing entire track sections would quickly fill a railway wagon. Not excessively difficult if you have a crane on a RR car and a few men trained to rig the lift correctly. The steel rails certainly would have been of value to the Germans for use elsewhere.
