Cage free eggs just get laid out of that same universal spot in the chicken's butt to roll around on the manure laden dirt until it is collected for packaging.

All manure is contaminated with e-coli which lives in the intestines of most living things.
However, the eggs go through a vigorous cleaning cycle because of that. The most common source of salmonella contamination is from humans.

Here in the US. In the EU, washing or cleaning eggs in any way is illegal.

Real egg nog has an unhealthy dose of a strong adult beverage, usually strong enough to kill any e-coli or salmonella bacteria present.

Incorrect, it only applies to grade A eggs. Grade B eggs that are used in processes that involve heat are not covered by this. The reason why grade A eggs are not washed is because egg shells, contrary to popular myth, are not completely impervious to moisture and have pores. Research has shown that washed eggs may take in virus contaminated water or chemicals such as chlorine. US washing makes the eggs cosmetically cleaner but in fact more prone to carry disease - in reality its a marketing gimmick which is dangerous.

BTW egg nog proper has strong spirits in it. The RN used to use pussers rum.
When I was young we got our eggs from the 'butter and egg man' who came to our house about once a week.
(And, ever since we went to the BVIs in the late '70s, Pusser's is the only rum that we drink at my house...and yes, I add it to our holiday nog as well as with tonic in the warm months and in a glass in the cold months...)

If I want to eat raw cookie dough and cake batter I will. I have more thoughts about this issue but have to run to the bathroom now because I think I'm coming down with something.

I think egg producers should be forced to hard boil their products to prevent any contamination using an autoclave...

Pusser's rum although a brave attempt is not the original pusser's rum as dished out in the RN by the purser until the rum ration was abolished in mid 1970. Pusser's although made to approximately the same specification as the old Navy rum is considerably lower in alcohol (although still higher than many drinks available today). There is still some of the old rum available from the last batches made for the Andrew before 1970. It is sold under the label Black Tot and I believe that the current price is £650 per bottle and rising as it becomes rarer.

Rum for the RN came not only from the BVI but also the Windward Islands - mainly Grenada. This was due to Nelson who had some sort of spat with the original merchants who supplied rum and so provisioned his fleet with it from the Windwards. Since then the Admiralty ensured that there was no monopoly by using both sources. The Windwards unlike the BVI never produced an export version for the civilian market and only continued to produce it for domestic consumption although I believe that some reached the USA during prohibition.

In the early 1980s when I was working for Peat Marwick Management Consultants the Windward government considered producing it for export using the Geest company as a vehicle. Geest bought most of the Islands' bananas and ran a fleet of Banana boats. At the time I had a team of consultants implementing a financial suite at Geest's Lincolnshire HQ. One latish December day a consignment of rum arrived from the Windwards and a tasting was organised to decide which variety to import. We were invited. Windwards rum is potent and very little work got done that day.

Some tars having a tot of pussers
