Don't lick the spoon or the bowl

Is nothing safe any more? It's not nanny stateism - even nanny let you scrape the mixing bowl.

The FDA updated its guidelines following an investigation into an E. coli outbreak in the US in 2016 where flour was found to be the cause.

The moral of the story is to use pre-mix cookie dough, just like Mom did.

From the flour? The e-coli contamination usually comes from the raw egg used in the cookie dough.

For the uneducated on where eggs come from, it comes out of the same place that the chicken manure come out of, then it rolls through that manure out of the cage into a tray for collection and packing into cartons to sell at the local food store.

Cage free eggs just get laid out of that same universal spot in the chicken's butt to roll around on the manure laden dirt until it is collected for packaging.

All manure is contaminated with e-coli which lives in the intestines of most living things.

Apparently a mill wasn't treating the grain before grinding it into flour, so the various animal droppings from the field and mill that the grain was exposed to were sent on to the consumer.

It is salmonella you are thinking about - though even that is not really all that bad in developed societies as the variants leading to typhoid fever are quite rare. Chicken egg surfaces may be contaminated with E. coli but rarely the insides of the eggs. But then that is what the washing is for. E. coli contamination is basically synonymous with 'poor hygienic conditions'.

Cool ...here, eat this raw fish...

Mom always said to not eat the raw cookie dough. She also used to make me 'egg nog' sometimes when we were out of Frosted Flakes. 'Egg nog' consisted of a raw egg, Nestle's Qwik and milk thrown into a cocktail shaker and shaken until foamy. Delicious! Full of protein, lactose, sugar, chocolatey goodness and god knows how much salmonella. Somehow, I never got sick from drinking those 'egg nogs'. Go figure.

When you were young, most flocks of chickens did not have salmonella - it a was the advent of intensive farm systems that allowed the infection to race through flocks so that by about 1988 it was endemic. After a 30 year programme of hen welfare improvements combined with vaccinations and culling of infected birds the British egg has just been declared once more free of salmonella. In the USA I believe that no vaccination programme has been adopted.

BTW egg nog proper has strong spirits in it. The RN used to use pussers rum.

Here there are vaccinations but also rather harsh methods dealing with infections - any sign of infection leads to slaughtering all the chickens in infected site (and carcasses burned) - and the disinfection requirements of the buildings are so high that it is much easier and cheaper to dismantle the infected building and build a new chicken 'farm'.

Of course it is a tad more expensive - http://www.foodsafetynews.com/2014/0...ella-feasible/ - in other words the reason why there is no such system is that USA thinks that it is too expensive to deal with salmonella. Dealing with infected people is apparently preferable to having more expensive but salmonella free chicken.

And yes, we still eat right out from the mixing bowl

Just a friendly note - Raw eggs are not something that ought to be eaten regularly regardless. Avidin (protein in egg white) does bind near permanently (in biological sense) with biotin (which is a vitamin - B7 to be exact). And since you kinda need some of that vitamin it can be bit of a bad thing to eat raw eggs regularly. Every now and then should be fine though.

You were talking of the culling of infected birds - here the it doesn't matter if they are infected or not - any detection of an infection in a chicken farm leads to the culling of all the birds of that farm, healthy and infected alike (and practically leads also to condemning the building as well).

But, it's worse than that...

Quote:
I had no idea temporary businesses children set up in their front yards could be illegal activities until I read a newspaper article about a town in Missouri that put two Girl Scouts out of business for selling boxes of cookies from their driveway. Apparently, a neighbor’s complaint about increased traffic and barking dogs due to activity in front of their home led to the city’s awareness of the sales. A letter from the city to the family then cited a violation of home occupancy codes — they were selling without a permit. Upon further research, I learned Girl Scout cookie sellers aren’t the only children having their afternoon businesses shuttered — lemonade stands and many little businesses are running into trouble.
https://www.huffingtonpost.com/women...b_1753057.html

Quote:
According to ABC affiliate KLTV, about an hour later and after a $25 profit, Overton police showed up and shut the lemonade stand down because the Green sisters did not have a "Peddler's Permit," which comes with a $150 fee.
http://www.cnn.com/2015/06/11/politi...xas/index.html

But, eating homemade cookies you bought at the swap meet is illegal too, as is selling them...

Quote:
Imagine a world where the police harass an 88 year old woman for bringing homemade coconut cream pies to a church Fish Fry, a 73 year old woman for bringing raisin pies, and a 69 year old woman for bringing pumpkin pies.
Oh wait! You don’t have to imagine it. That’s the world we live in.
https://www.foodrenegade.com/do-you-...l-baked-goods/

Quote:
The crux of the story? Selling baked goods made in someone’s home kitchen is illegal — unless that person’s home happens to contain a certified commercial kitchen.
To be fair, the state will “allow” you to sell homemade baked goods if you pay $35 to have your kitchen inspected (and it passes).
Oh, the insanity!

Quote:
In the Badger State, the simple act of selling freshly baked cakes and cookies is not so simple. Bakers can’t sell what they’ve created in their home kitchens. Instead, to legally operate, bakers must become licensed as either a “food processing plant” or a “retail food establishment.” Complying with the law forces farmers and home bakers to either build their own commercial-grade kitchen (which can cost upwards of $40,000 to $80,000) or rent space at a commercial kitchen, which can easily top $1,000 a month.
