Some of those photographs perfectly illustrate the German instructions on how to tell the difference between British Commonwealth and US forces when looking at Luftwaffe recce photographs. The British were always careful to go around the edges of fields to avoid crushing crops whereas the US didn't care.

Nonsense. In the first place, there are NO crops in those frozen, snow covered fields to begin with.

And following in line along edges or tree lines is how you avoid being seen, especially from the air.

Ruislip, England 1946, no injuries, this DC-3 pilot couldn't climb after taking off, the snowstorm probably had something to do with it..

How crops grow in the snow?

What a stupid policy.

Man, I bet it was miserable in those open-topped tank destroyers. At least the tanks had a roof, and were probably moderately warm.

Wheat is sown during autumn, at a depth of only a few centimeters. Get several multi-ton vehicles to churn up the field and expose the seeds to the elements and you've destroyed next year's crop, even if you don't see anything growing there in the snow. Nothing stupid about that policy.

Extremely stupid.

1) they limit their troop's mobility. Which is more important: your soldier's lives, or a few hundred bushels of someone else's grain?

2) the enemy air recon knows exactly who is who.

3) made it real easy for the German engineers to know where to planet mines.
