These look like Panthers in the middle of an Ardennes field but we shouldn't read too much into photos, they might have been captured and driven around for fun..

I was addressing the stupidity factor solely from the standpoint that there are no crops growing there in the snow.
From an agricultural standpoint, it's not stupid, since damage could be done to what is beneath the surface even if there's no visible crop there.

True, and a fact I had not considered.

Having considered the point, I went with "so what?".

Would like to see a reference to the policy. Could there actually be a practical reason? In winter the ground is fairly muddy. The ground nearest the edges may be firmer reducing the chances of getting stuck.

Imperial usually knows his facts.

It sounds right, anyway. In Vladimir Littauer's memoirs (WW1) he mentions dispatch riders being rebuked for cutting through barley fields and tearing up the crops.

Thinking on it, when we trained with the Brits in the 80s they have a much more considerate attitudes towards the locals than we had.

The grain thing aside, I would bet that this policy has more to do with rear areas than immediate combat lines. As such none of the points matter. German air recon for the sole reason that by this point of war it didn't matter anyway...

They will often lie dormant until the ground warms and then start to grow when the ground warms but not if the ground is compressed by by some stupid running something heavy over it. You can gain weeks by Autumn sowing.

I'm assuming that PR does not mean Proportional Representation as it does over here

Why not just don checkered polyester pants, white shoes, take your dinner at 4pm, and move on down to Florida, aka God's Waiting Room?

PR: Puerto Rico.

Dinner at 4pm! - that's tea! Any gentle person knows that dinner is at seven unless they are from the north of England when it is about 12 - 1 pm

Or they're living in Florida: restaurants there offer "early bird specials," when early dinner is discounted, so all the old farts living on pensions dine at 4. That puts them to bed by 8. They also putter along at 25 mph (40 kph) in the left lane -- or the right if you're driving British.

That's the East Coast version... Here in Arizona we put those geriatrics in their own separate towns to keep them from messing things up for the rest of us, like Sun City. Homes are only sold to people over 50 years old... (really, it's in the title to the property).

You can still find functioning Luby's, Coco's, and other 60's style restaurants and cafeterias there too! They just cracked down on golf carts driven on the major streets again when people passing through on those started bi+*hing about them to government.

No hurricanes or such here either. The worst is the occasional dirt storm...
