Salute to Edouard Detaille

I read recently that Salvador Dali rated Detaille as the greatest French painter of all time. Quite an achievement. I've always seen his work as the epitome of Gallic martialness. Not only an eye for illustrative detail but a painterly quality to his finest work too. Just received 'L'Armee Francaise' through the post today. His drawings are superb. Post your favourites!

L'Armee Francaise

This book is an essential to any student of the Grande Armee. Interestingly, the 15th Cuirassiers, formed by Marshal Davout in Hamburg, is mentioned in the text. I've had it for years.

Detaille, Meissonnier and their American 'descendant,' Keith Rocco have all produced excellent material on the Napoleonic period. Keith is an outstanding military artist, is self-taught, and has captured the Grande Armee on canvas.

Sincerely,
M

Love this one. I think part of Detaille's apeal is his interest, not only in military detail but the human figure in general and the particularities of something such as this windmill.

I love that one, Jeroen.

Since we are talking about the Franco-Prussian War...

The huge Panorama of the battle of Mars-la-Tour ( Rezonville ) was amazing. It was painted by Detaille and De Neuville in 1883. The painting was exhibited in Paris and Vienna for many years.

There are many reasons why the painting was divided. After panorama painting went out of style, many felt that Detaille's painting had no value if it was not exhibited. Cutting it into pieces of reasonable size was the only way for it to be displayed easily.

The sketches ( left to right )

Some fragments

Grenadiers of the French Imperial Guard after some heavy fighting. They lost 1,200 men at Mars-la-Tour.

Two dead Prussian cavalrymen ( Uhlan and Cuirassier ). They took part in the famous Von Bredow's Death Ride.
