Thumbs up

Ali Bonaparte's got a corner shop round our way so it must be true.
Had a pal who committed suicide in a bedsit when his missus kicked him out after she started having it off with a Voltijoor. They were all re-enactors and wargamers, which is a double whammy on the road to being doolally!
He was a great fan of Boney... they found him in bed, dead as a Dodo, with a bottle of booze, pills, an opened copy of 'The Anatomy of Glory' and his bust of the little man in the funny 'at on the dresser. Very sad, but, true is that little story.

I don't think Bonaparte was all that tolerant he certainly was not of Toussaint L'Ouverture.
From what I've been reading as of late (Written in Blood: The Story of the Haitian People 1492-1971 by Robert Debs Heinl & Nancy Gordon Heinl) he intended to reinstate slavery in the French Colonies & use the Caribbean as a stepping stone to recapturing the Province of Louisiana, New France.
The Slave that defeated Napoleon: Toussaint L'Ouverture...

Slavery & the French Revolution:
http://www.historywiz.com/slavery-frenchrev.htm
So his intentions were not always good he had plans for attacking the New Nation of the United States in the works.
I don't think Thomas Jefferson trusted him at this time period as he was aware of this and kept the peace with Great Britain for the moment at least...

That must have been before 1815 though, when Napoleon abolished slavery in all of the French Empire?

Yes in 1793 Napoleon lost it's richest colony killing slavery throughout the Antilles. As rich as a Creole was commonly heard to be said throughout the time period but died with the Slave Uprising of 1791 in St. Dominique. Louis XVI didn't realize his thrown was perched on top of a volcano until too late.Napoleon's aspirations in America died as well without St. Dominique as a stepping stone Louisiana exceeded his reach as did reclaiming New France.
After hearing about the loss he was quoted as saying " Damn Sugar!... Damn Coffee!... Damn Colonies!" - Napoleon Bonaparte 1803.

It has been alleged that Bonaparte, when in Egypt, took part in the religious ceremonies and worship of the Mussulmans; but it cannot be said that he celebrated the festivals of the overflowing of the Nile and the anniversary of the Prophet. The Turks invited him to these merely as a spectator; and the presence of their new master was gratifying to the people. But he never committed the folly of ordering any solemnity. He neither learned nor repeated any prayer of the Koran, as many persons have asserted; neither did he advocate fatalism polygamy, or any other doctrine of the Koran. Bonaparte employed himself better than in discussing with the Imans the theology of the children of Ismael. The ceremonies, at which policy induced him to be present, were to him, and to all who accompanied him, mere matters of curiosity. He never set foot in a mosque; and only on one occasion, which I shall hereafter mention, dressed himself in the Mahometan costume. He attended the festivals to which the green turbans invited him. His religious tolerance was the natural consequence of his philosophic spirit.

Napoleon was not irreligious in the ordinary sense of the word. He would not admit that there had ever existed a genuine atheist; he condemned Deism as the result of rash speculation. A Christian and a Catholic, he recognized in religion alone the right to govern human societies. He looked on Christianity as the basis of all real civilization; and considered Catholicism as the form of worship most favorable to the maintenance of order and the true tranquility of the moral world; Protestantism as a source of trouble and disagreements. Personally indifferent to religious practices, he respected them too much to permit the slightest ridicule of those who followed them.

Fwiw for the future III Corps I will not respond to any of your questions if you act in a similar manner in other threads. I answered your question, I would appreciate it if you would answer my questions.

I'm sure the Muslims believed he was a Muslim, like some Catholics believed he was a Catholic,

he took his Imperial crown from the hands of the Pope and crowned himself though - that should tell you all you need to know about his belief system
