I also voted F&I, mainly due to its historical importance, but I also have to admit my ignorance concerning many of the other conflicts. I agree that threads on these would be highly beneficial, for most of us I think.

Since several members have expressed interest in more information about the various conflicts of colonial America, I thought I'd go ahead and dedicate a few threads here for the discussion of these conflicts. Over the coming days I'll try to post some information concerning these lesser known conflicts as I find the time.

Thanks HG, I figured that it wouldn't take too much prodding to get these conflicts covered. I would just mention the importance of our posts, Google seems to rate the quality of the ACG very highly. We're often in the first five listings on a topic so we should not underestimate the impact of what we write here, particularly for less well known topics.

Indeed...that is how I wound up here. I had Googled some Napoleonic topic and got hooked!

I'm most interested in the Anglo-Dutch wars, particularly because I know very little about them.

Indeed. Same here. Assumed these were trade wars fought out in European waters, while the results reverberated in the colonies.

Not really, guerilla warfare is very old, since before the Roman Empire.

Yes, basically I included these in the poll because of their very important impact on colonial North America. New Amsterdam was captured by the English in 1664 without a shot fired (Stuyvesant seems to have been the only one willing to fight the English), causing the Second Anglo-Dutch War. And then recaptured briefly by a huge Dutch fleet during the Third Anglo-Dutch war.

I went with Queen Anne's War, though not solely for it's American aspects. I voted for Queen Anne's war for laying the foundations for turning England into an economic and world superpower, even if not the dominant continental power within Europe. England got a lot out of this war, and from here on, the French would always be in the position of trying to play catch-up to the English (and they never did, as England emerged the winner of every Franco-English war with the unique exception of the American Revolution.)

See the Treaty of Utrecht 1713
Quote:
In addition, Spain ceded Gibraltar and Minorca to Great Britain and agreed to give to the British the Asiento, a valuable monopoly slave-trading contract. In North America, France ceded to Great Britain its claims to the Hudson's Bay Company territories in Rupert's Land, Newfoundland and Acadia. The formerly partitioned island of Saint Kitts was also ceded in its entirety to Britain. France was required to recognize British suzerainty over the Iroquois and commerce with the Far Indians was to be open to traders of all nations.
So Britain divided the continental powers of Europe, restraining Louis XIV, gained control of the rich and lucrative fishing and whaling waters off of NewFoundland, received a recognized monopoly right to sell slaves to the Spanish imperial colonies, got the Rock of Gibralter and other pieces of real estate that are only of value to worldly naval empires. And it got French and Spanish recognition of the protestant succession within England (this was important, if you remember Queen Anne's father, James II, was deposed for his Catholic loyalties and the French and Spanish had been trying to put or keep Catholics on the British throne for the last hundred-years).
Just to clarify for anyone confused by the last sentance, Queen Anne was raised a protestant, and as a protestant she succeeded the protestant William & Mary to the throne even though her father had been a deposed catholic king.

My family was in Sicily, but were in danger from the Cochisi, the redskins with purple feet. But having spent some time in the Upeer NY area, I was taught (maybe influenced) in school about the 7 Years War and the Revolution.

I personally feel a connection to Bacon's Rebellion because it is the earliest conflict I can trace one of my own ancestors to. I descend from a man named Traylor who had immigrated about the same time as Nathaniel Bacon. He settled in the same area as Bacon and probably shared many of the same misconceptions about Indians, etc. Edward joined Bacon's rebellion and probably participated in the burning of Jamestown. After Bacon died of the Bloody Flux several of the remaining leaders of the rebellion were tried and hung. I know that Edward Traylor died soon after the rebellion but have never been able to discover if he died of natural cause or directly due to his participation.

Poor Jenkins...I wonder how much of his ear was left attached. I wonder if it is true that he put his ear in a box to present it at Parliament.
