Question New proposal

The politics section should be divided into two.

The first part can be as the forum currently is.

The second part can be concerned with the history of politics, and leaving current politics out of it.

Just a thought.

Sounds like a really good idea on paper; but I don't think it would work in practice.

Can you give examples of current threads that would fit into the second section you propose (the History of Politics)? I think they would be very few.

I'd prefer to see a North American sub-forum which would deal with North American current events outside of current politics (e.g. the current wildfires in the western US and much of the crime-related US stories, human interest, etc.) . Absent of such a non-political US sub-forum, threads dealing with North American non political events are exclusively posted in the Barracks or Politics Central. This tends to identify ACG as a uniquely American forum, which is not how I would like to see ACG. Others will likely disagree and prefer to keep the Americocentric focus.

Currently, we have Europe, Africa, South America, Middle East, Asia, etc. sub-forums. But no North America or U.S. sub-forum. Why is that?

Are they not significant or deserving enough to have their own sub-forum like the other regions?

Just my suggestion.

I see where you're coming from Nick. I think, like me, you'd like ACG to further isolate US partisan vitriolic politics from what we are all exposed to and have the site as a whole be far less Americocentric in its geographical/historical construction.

(That said, we do recognize of course, that America is the greatest country in the world. )

I see endless debates on what is current, especially given issues like Gitmo, which has been running for over a decade.

A sensible suggestion, but this may not be a sensible issue. Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't the purpose of the Politics forum to draw away all the pundits and zealots evangelizing their respective ideology, so that at least on the rest of the forum something worthwhile may be said?

No. It's to discuss politics. The rest of the forum if for all of the other zealots and wingnuts to air out their headspace.

How do you propose to discuss "the history of politics" without actually discussing politics?

Not a bad idea. But I'm not sure if some of the forum members could keep their current political mindset out of it.

Sub-forums could be:
- The impact of corruption on elections
- Dirty tricks during elections campaigns
- Women vote
- Parliamentary system vs Presidential system

Excellent idea. Your concept works well on other forums. Alternatively, current events (non-political) should have a separate forum.
