Radioactive Boar Shot in Sweden

A boar from the Chernobyl zone decided to invade Sweden and had to be shot dead by Swedish rangers because he was highly radioactive, but otherwise looked healthy.

This raises interesting questions on how well the animals have adapted to living in the radioactive zone. They are not dropping dead from cancer. They are thriving and making lots of babies.

Rangers are putting them down to prevent humans from trying to eat their meat.

That is a Swedish Boar. The radioactive zone from the accident extended into Sweden. The Reindeer are also affected.

Swine can and do eat anything they find. That is why the radiation count in them is rising with time.

Mind you if it flew to get away from ground zero with its ass on fire, it could have made a better choice to head for than hotspot Sweden..

Hell the fallout went globally.

As a side note my mom just got dosed with radioactive iodine for a thyroid disease called Graves Disease. (Great name right?) She can't be closer than eight feet to anyone for a week and we have to treat her paper plates and every thing she's touched as radioactive waste and store it in the garage for a month before disposing of it...

Ps. don't be a ahole and crack jokes about it... It's a serious disease and I'm greatly concerned with this.

Sounds like the medical types that told you that are being grossly over cautious. The one isotope of iodine that is long lived (15.7 million years) is a beta emitter and decays to Xenon. That's a real slow decay rate and it isn't harmful unless you ingest it.

Well I'd expect this article explains the medicine and why its used. She's elderly and so cancer is of small concern.

http://www.gdatf.org/about/about-gra...active-iodine/

And no she doesn't glow...

It's that her sweat will contain the isotope and everything she touches is considered contaminated.

The piggy in question was shot in the region in central Sweden, north of Stockholm, that got most of the radiation fall out from Chernobyl. (Didn't we already get a thread about this?)

This has been a feature with people in the northern parts for thirty years now, that you need to be aware of this and keep consumption of berries, mushroom etc. picked in the forests up north within certain limits.

The pigs were hunted next to extinction in the 19th and 20th c. (most large animals were), but are native to the south. In the last decades (through farmland falling into disuse, decrease in grazing for cattle elsewhere) there has been a reforestation down south, and as a consequence the habitats of the pigs have expanded, and they have started moving north as their number increase. By now they have for the first time reached the area where the fall-out was greatest. Biologists and environmentalists were anticipating this one — since the pigges eat most thing out of the ground, they were set for ingesting a lot of the residual radiation picked upp by plants and fungi. The radiation has completed a full half-life cycle since the accident (30 years), but it turns out there's still enough surface radiation around to make this one not-so-healthy piggy to eat. (Fortunately the radiation is on the surface and hasn't penetrated to the ground-water or the like.)

I wouldn't think she would "glow." And, yes, normally the maximum dosage a person is allowed annually creeps up with age. There's a formula used in the nuclear power industry for this.

D = 5(A-18) Where D is dose, and A is age. The answer is in REM and the max in any year at any age is usually set to 20 rem.

Normally, 5 REM is the max allowable in a year for people working in nuclear related fields.

As for her contaminating stuff, that's erring on the side of caution, not necessarily something you should concern yourself with.
