A few nights back, while shutting of PC for the night, got a "turn off with updates" message and didn't look close enough. Next morning start-up should everything had been deleted.

Tried a recovery and restore program via "EaseUS" but that doesn't seem to have worked. Had my IT guy here yesterday and no good results, no chance to restore. He thinks we may have snagged a virus.

Real pain to have to rebuild bookmarks and redo passwords, etc.; not to mention the lost files. Will be getting a back-up system soon to make current archiving in the future.

Meanwhile, any suggestions out there on other options to try for recover and restore???

This article is seven years old but it's still useful . You'll need a lot of patience or an IT guy to do it . https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/3180...ur-windows-pc/

Scroll down to, "Recover Data (Like a Forensics Expert) ", and begin .

A suggestion as to how to back-up your system . With Clonezilla you copy the whole system, operating system, files, drivers, the whole lot . If you have a home based computer you could use it to backup once a month . More often if you have more files . All you need is a terabyte plus size drive to backup to . http://www.clonezilla.org/

Have you tried system restore? Basically if it's switched on it rolls it back to the point before the incident.

That usually won't work if data has been corrupted by malware. You're best bet is backups to a portable along with several sequentially dated system image backups. The Micro$oft one for Windows 7 is good, or better yet, the third party software for cloning the C drive. Forgot using Norton's Ghost on Windows 10. Micro$oft deliberately disabled it's activation code.

Speaking about getting help, NEVER use the Geek Squad from Best Buy. They are being paid by the FBI to snoop for deleted files.

CBS Local — A child pornography case against a California doctor has revealed that Geek Squad technicians have worked with the FBI to uncover data on customer’s computers for years. One non-profit is now saying that the nature of the FBI’s relationship with the techs may have violated the U.S. Constitution.
Digital rights non-profit Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit last year after it was discovered that the FBI allegedly paid Geek Squad employees to go through their client’s computers while they’re being repaired.
One such search led to felony child porn charges against Dr. Mark Rettenmaier after a technician reportedly went through the oncologist’s deleted files and called the FBI in 2011. In 2017, a judge ruled that the images found in Dr. Rettenmaier’s computer could not be considered child porn and the invasive search was illegal. All charges were dropped and the case was dismissed after Judge Cormac Carney said an FBI agent made “false and misleading statements” to obtain a search warrant for the doctor’s house.

It depends on where the malware is. If it gets deep enough then you are right. There are somethings that will plant themselves in in things like the system clock and the bios, you pretty much have to kill them with fire to get rid.

Right now the in thing seems to be hijacking some of the WiFi enabled household appliances. Fridges, light bulbs even. There is sod all protection on some of them and they can be used for denial of service attacks.
