Interestingly running speed declines slower as you increase the distance for women than for men.

Is this the test? Doesn't look that hard e.g at 46 I could run 3 miles in a little over 18 minutes yet the test only requires you to do it in 33.

Women can be tough. The winner in this where competitors went through a range of SF selection processes was a woman.

Now we have all the chest thumping and testosterone levels elevated.....the US Forces are one of the few left on the face of the earth that dont allow women to enjoy yomping across the boonies...Hell in my time "in" (years ago) I knew males that couldnt past the tests.......When I went to the paras there were some little guys there that we had to load with extra gear so they would land on the same DZ as the rest of us.....later when in the airforce we had women mechs who could lug and tug with the rest of us....

It a lack of doing this kind of stuff. Plus modern life style sitting at a desk.

I started doing this stuff made a world of difference for me. You actually see players in the NFL doing this stuff on the side lines every once in a while

Why not let them test, and if they pass then let them prove themselves?

Can't speak for the American Marines but the British RM are now entirely Commando trained. It is one Hell of a course and surprisingly men of all sizes get through and men built like 'Arnold' fail. Up until recently only one women has completed the course and I believe to obtain woman in the Corps the course is reduced. As the Corps is now entirely Green Beret all ( or most ) of the RM Vets have swapped over to green berets from their regular Navy Blue, I refuse to do so for I served in Combined Ops: then in RM Infantry all under the Navy Blue so I continue to do so. lcm1

I like to run half-marathons and go backcountry, but I didn't always take care of myself. The stretching and foam rollers make all the difference now! I even do yoga sometimes. Anything to keep the active life!

All depends on what you're doing. Lots of long-distance stuff at light to moderate loads, the smaller built guys have a natural edge of not carrying around the weight and bulk. Need heavy objects moved, things smashed, etc.....find that ogre in the unit. Think of it like American Football. The 175 pound guy can run like no one's business and can do it all day long. But the 235lb linebacker can load a 155 howitzer with ease, kick down doors on the first try, and tote the receiver for the .50cal or Mk19.

It's all a matter of conditioning, focus, and willpower. I used to get paired with the smallest guys in the platoon on humps, because I'd wind up humping about a third of their pack. Last 15 miler I did my pack weighed in at 110lbs because I was humping most of the other guy's heavy gear (he was 145lbs soaking wet and I weighed in at 230lbs back then). Currently on my agency's SWAT team I have one of the 5 slowest run times, but I sit comfortably in the middle of the sprints, body drag, and crawling, and I have the agency record for running stairs in full gear with the heavy ram. 60 plus pounds of gear doesn't mean as much to me as it does to our lighter guys.

Nice post! I can run for days, but backcountry I move slower and ditch my tent for a tarp to cut the weight...though there's always room for a flask of Maker's Mark.
