Poland to service Bulgaria's Soviet-era MiG-29 fighter jets

Seems like everyone is in the same boat budget-wise. With the cost of new air-frames essentially out of reach, keep what you have flying till the wings fall off.

WARSAW, Poland (AP) Poland's defense ministry says the country has reached a preliminary agreement with Bulgaria to modernize the Balkan country's Soviet-era fleet of MiG-29 fighter jets.

That is interesting, we have a flying condition MIG 29 in our museum. The word I hear from the technicians is that it is a very maintenence demanding aircraft that needs to fly somewhat frequently or systems start failing more rapidly. Probably not much different from most modern jet fighters but is more demanding than I thought a late Soviet era plane would be.

I seem to remember that some time back, when Egypt moved away from getting their aircraft supplied by the Soviets, that Rolls Royce and British Aerospace picked up a contract to update their Mig 21s.

Given the shortage of cash I would have thought 2nd hand might be more likely, though Saab have been making hay in some countries with a leased Gripen offer.

WZL are making a tidy sum in various deals around middle Europe.
