Iain Banks Culture series.

The originals were published in the late eighties through the nineties and if you pick up one of these copies the cover artwork might put you off as it looks dated Sci-Fi. Far from it. Given when he was writing, the futurology is superb, including an imaging of how AI, robotics, nanotechnology and gene splicing might play out. A believable future universe is created with storylines usually based around a symbolic relationship between humans and machines - the Culture. The story arc is usually focused on a central character on a specific mission for the Culture. I find these engrossing storylines. There are about 7 or 8 books in the series and I am half way though. I heartedly commend them to you!

Excellent series! I read 4 of them back in the day and remember liking them a lot.

Consider Phlebas, The Player Of Games, Use Of Weapons and Excession were the ones I read. I had no idea that there were more.

Heard of these and even had 'Use of Weapons' in my hand once, because of the title.
For some reason I must have decided against it

I've read the firs three of those. Lucky you, there are quite a few left for you to read. . The last one was published in 2012.

The cover art work was so lame in the early editions I don't blame you. My copy has a ship being shot down by a laser over what looks like the Grand Canyon. Wouldn't have read it based on the cover. The later publishing run improve the artwork and make it look more appealing.

Just received this book and it looks interesting.
Amazon blurb on it:
Quote:
Civil-military relations have been a consistent theme of the history of the Weimar Republic. This study focuses on the career of General Walther Reinhardt, the last Prussian Minister of War and the First Head of the Army Command in the Weimar Republic. Though less well known than his great rival, Hans von Seeckt, Reinhardt's role in forming the young Reichswehr and his writings on warfare made him one of the most important and influential military figures in interwar Germany. Contrary to the conventional view that civil-military relations were fraught from the outset, the author argues, Reinhardt's contribution to the military politics of the Weimar Republic shows that opportunities for reform and co-operation with civilian leaders existed. However, although he is primarily seen as a liberal General, this study demonstrates that he was motivated by professional military considerations and by the specter of a future war. His ideas on modern warfare were amongst the most radical of the time.

I've read that Masters Of Death. There's some good info in there but it's hard reading. Not because of the author's style but the subject matter. Grim.

Only on the first chapter but given the subject matter can see your point that it will be depressing reading.

Widowmaker, a novel by E.R.Johnson about a B-26 crew flying in Europe.

Just started it. Quite interesting and well-researched.
