Major Rosenheimer has recovered from his brief illness. Forward soldiers of the Fatherland!

Bennholzer growls, "Its about time." Under his breath.
The gruff German ruffles the young officer's hair. "We need to get a move on." He smiles then.

Umm, might it not have been better to keep attacking at MaloYaroslavets as opposed to returning on the the same burnt out path which Michel de Barclay had performed a scorched earth policy on before Borodino. In the middle of winter, whymove an army where there is no food? Miloradovich had an intact army corps but was out numbered by the Grande Armee even in October 1812. Perhaps his strategy was correct; let the opponent waste themselves away, and we can save bullets.

You don't say? Lets see if Stratego can rewrite history before the next move of a this game based on a historical time-line.

Russian defensive positions after battle of Maloyaroslavets were too strong therefore decision was made to retreat back to Smolensk where supplies had to be stored.

Right. It would have been more work to move south (assuming they could break through the Russians) and send out foraging parties to gather and bring in supplies/stores to the troops. All this to be done while the whole army is on the move.

Instead, it was easier to move back on the same path to places where food stores, etc. where already and waiting.
