Ban on F22 exports

Unlike almost every other significant US fighter aircraft since before WW2, I can't think of any actually, no F22s were exported.

It's predecessor, the F15 was exported to Japan, Saudi and Israel. Over 1800 (all variants) F15s were built compared to 195 f22s. Benefits of export include cheap assistance to Allies, American jobs and income and reduced unit costs to US tax payer due to economies of scale.

The reason given for no exports was unwillingness to share technology, yet when it was first exported the F15 was far and away the best fighter in the world yet there was no problem with sharing its technology.

Was the decision to ban exports correct?

Probably another bad decision from an administration that makes a lot of bad decisions.

IIRC, several patent rights were involved.

Which administration was that, Bush 2? This is just as bad as people blaming Bush for things today--blaming Obama for things that happened before he was president. The blind partisanship around here is stupid. It entered service in 2005. Who was president then? One of the reasons it wasn't exported was because it would cannibalize the market for the later F35. It's just like the F15, we sold it to very few countries. We preferred to sell the less capable F16, which was "good enough" for smaller, less rich air forces.

The ban on export of the F-22 is based on Public Law 105-56 as amended put forth by Rep David Obey. Australia, Japan, and Israel requested the Aircraft and an export version was considered (F-22EX) but these requests were ultimately rejected by the Clinton administration.

Quote:
PUBLIC LAW 105–56—OCT. 8, 1997
111 STAT. 1205
Sec.. 8118. None of the funds made available in this Act may be used to approve or license the sale of the F–22 advanced tactical fighter to any foreign government.

Why shouldn't I? Gates proposed closing the line in 2009. The last plane rolled off in 2011. Who was President?
Which one of the two has proposed the largest cuts in the military in decades to pre-WW 2 levels even?

If Gates hadn't proposed it Obama would have...

Sell the F22? But then who would buy the F35?

By that time all the foreign air forces looking for a new plane were locked into the F35.

The topic at hand was F-22 exports, the ban on which has been in place from Bush 2, and not F-22 production for the US military, which is an entirely different and unrelated discussion.
