If you read Catton and Col Elting, you'll find that your statement is inaccurate.

You're judging Grant by early 21st century standards. And, no, one drink does not make you drunk, inebriated, or incapacitated. I have one drink on my birthday every year, taken with my coffee. One shot of Courvoisier does not make me inebriated, drunk, or incapacitated.

Grant was one officer of many who drank in an army of two-fisted drinkers.
