Perhaps you were just in a not very competant unit. If you had up to date MVs and up to date met then the mpi would have been close to where you wanted it. Of course arty is an area weapon and its primary function is suppression, which to be effective has to be where its needed and for the duration required. A lesson learned in WW1.
