Hundreds of bodies remain strewn in the bush in Nigeria amid an ongoing attack described by Amnesty International as the "deadliest massacre" by Boko Haram.

Mike Omeri, the government spokesman, said fighting continued on Friday for Baga, a town on the border with Chad where Boko Haram fighters seized a key military base on January 3 and attacked again on Wednesday.

Hundreds of bodies – too many to count – remain strewn in the bush in Nigeria from an Islamic extremist attack that Amnesty International described as the “deadliest massacre” in the history of Boko Haram.

Fighting continued on Friday around Baga, a town on the border with Chad where insurgents seized a key military base on 3 January and attacked again on Wednesday.
http://www.theguardian.com/world/201...e-baga-nigeria

The figures being suggested are that something like 2000 people may have been murdered in this latest atrocity. In the run up to an election it would be logical to assume that the violence will intensify.

Quote:
A separate French-led initiative called for all four West African countries to contribute 700 troops each to a multinational force against Boko Haram, but no country has implemented the plan.

Niger has blamed Nigeria, saying it has not kept to commitments regarding its own troop levels.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-30743030

Niger and Chad have said that they are withdrawing forces from this particular area, although they say that they will still continue to deal with Boko Haram. The existing taskforce was originally set up to deal with crime. This war has already spilled over from Nigeria's borders. It is difficult to see at the moment what constructive steps are underway to address the problem.

JOHANNESBURG - The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco) says terror group Boko Haram cannot be allowed to continue its violent siege in Nigeria where an estimated 2,000 people in 16 villages and towns were killed last week in the country's northern bushveld.
Local authorities say the majority of those killed were women and children who could not outrun the militants.

Boko Haram has terrorised Nigeria's rural and urban population in the north for more than five years, with a spike in the number of attacks in recent weeks.

While South African soldiers aren’t involved in the battle yet, government says it is ready to act if called upon.

Dirco’s Clayson Monyela says Boko Haram’s reign of terror is unacceptable and West African leaders must come up with a comprehensive plan to fight back.

“We can’t sit by and just watch people being slaughtered in this manner. We are calling on the international community to rally behind Nigeria.”

Monyela says South Africa has not yet been asked to intervene.
The SANDF has made these units aviabel for the AU's new crissess intervenstion force.

It's terrible what's happening there. The government apathy is astounding, they seem like hiding their head in the sand.

This force alone seem quite formidable. Will they be deploying soon? Hopefully they don't take prisoners, as I'm reminded of some Somali pirates captured by France, when they were tried in France the court even awarded then damages!

They still need Nigeria to ask for help.

I don't think Nigerian courts are like French courts. They more likely to charge a family member for the bullet used to kill your son or who ever.

Well, better than what we're reading about Nigeria now. The impression I'm getting is that it's close to losing control.

I think it is fantastic that South Africa has stepped up to the plate. Hopefully Nigeria is not too proud to accept their help. God only knows it appears the Nigerians don't have the balls to even try to fight these animals.

Hi

Hope its of some interest:-

Quote:
The top commander of U.S. troops in Africa said he would like the U.S. military to do more to fight the terrorist group Boko Haram, but that it’s up to Nigerian and U.S. policy officials to decide how much they’re willing to change the trajectory of that group’s violent stronghold on the region.

U.S. Africa Command’s Gen. David Rodriguez, who previously served as the No. 2-ranking commander of the Afghanistan war, said he believes to turn the tide against Boko Haram would require a full-scale counterinsurgency plan across four countries.

The group now controls a vast territory of northeast Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad and Niger.

A civil rights worker in Nigeria's restive northeast organised the dramatic rescue of nearly 500 schoolgirls from a town under attack by Boko Haram. He has been credited with averting a repeat of the abduction, in April last year, of 279 students from the town of Chibok, most of whom are still missing.

Ibrahim Garuba Wala, better known as I G Wala, a leader of Nigeria's National Consensus Movement (NCM) arranged for the daring evacuation of the children from deep in the bush, where they had fled with their teachers.

The Syrian Caliphate was bounded by nations strong enough to stop its expansion north, west and south, so far at least and it does not look like they will make much more progress in Iraq.

If Boko Haram get momentum going, the surrounding States are weak and liable to topple with external pressure. Perhaps the African Caliphate could expand more quickly than in Syria.
