Balls Bluff - Need some information

Hey guys, I am in the middle of doing some research on the battle of Balls Bluff and was wondering if anybody has the head count for each Company or Regiment that participated... I would need this information for both sides.

Or if you could point me to an appropriate link I would appreciate it.

Thanks.

Bil

Have you tried the Official Records?

Here is the excerpt of Colonel Evans' report, Seventh Brigade, First Corps / Army of the Potomac. The best I could find was an aggregrate (Evans reports as 1709). However, you might come closer if you go over corps returns either the preceding or following months.

Returns from August 1861:

Went digging into the sub reports from the battle and this is what I turned up from the Confederate side (here http://ebooks.library.cornell.edu/cg...=root;size=100 );

Three companies Virginia Cavalry: 50
8th Virginia Infantry: 375
18th Mississippi Infantry: 500
17th Mississippi Infantry: 600
One Company, 13th Mississippi Infantry: 60

More great stuff... I have the Joint Committee on the Conduct of the War report on the battle but these have more detail yet. I knew the official reports had to exist online somewhere but I didn't know where they resided.

Much appreciated.

Joint Committee on the Conduct of the War report in case any are interested (on First Manassas and Balls Bluff):

No problem. Cornell and OSU both keep the official records in online format. It takes a little digging, but usually you can find a basic overview of just about anything in there.

There is a book called A Little Short of Boats: The Fight at Ball's Bluff and Edwards Ferry that was written by James Morgan. He is a battlefield guide at Ball's Bluff and the guy you should talk to about this battle.

According to Fox's Regimental Losses in the American Civil War 1861 - 1865 the total casualities for the North at Ball's Bluff were:

1st California - 228
15th Massachusetts - 302
20th Massachusetts - 281
42nd New York - 133

Note: The 1st California later became the 71st Pennsylvania.

I will try to get in contact with James. I have the OB he put together on the battle and that was a big help.

Downloaded Fox's document above. Thanks!
