Good bye Cassini.

Cassini is due to fly its final mission.

Thanks for all the data and visuals, may that inspire the youth to keep reaching out and exploring.

It would be interesting if after the final dive there was a blast of coherent radiation from Saturn that on interpretation was found to say STOP LITTERING !

Very interesting story on Cassini on PBS' show "Nova" last night.

Worth watching to understand the findings and significance of the mission.

It's gone. As predicted it lasted about a minute in Saturn's atmosphere

And now ESA will have to take up the slack as NASA gets gutted to fund irrational attempts at interdiction.

I suspect cooperation like this is the future though,

https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/s.../nasa_esa.html

National competition served us perfectly well in exploiting this planet, but out there things work on a different timescale altogether..

It is encouraging in this regard, that despite recent political differences between EU/US/Russia, these co ops continue to function as intended, as far as I know.

Well If the major powers on earth, all combined, can't afford it anymore it will end - but this sort of cooperation should really transcend individual governments.

There will times when one party spends more then the other, but even then we should take care to include scientists from across the political borders in the various programs imho.

For a while there Russian rockets put US astronauts into orbit, don't know if that's still the case, but at least even in a time of "sanctions" and "diplomatic measures" I've heard no one suggest this sort of cooperation should end.

If we have an anti-science government we won't be participating in the research.

Still do and not the best arrangement when only one nation can do this, especially if it should become more hostile to USA interests. Many here claim we are overdue to redevelop our own vehicle for this again. The thread on such;
Russian "space monkleys" make "America Great" in Outer Space, etc.at
