Skin Cancer Topical Cream Query

I'm on the cream to kill the skill cancer. Right now my face looks like I lost a fight with a blender. My gut is that the doc will keep me on it for another week, but the itching is unbearable and the itch/pain factor keeps waking me up at night. Has anyone else gone through this? Any tricks to make it feel better?

On a brighter note, after an especially crappy January I am pumped for February. I gave up beer for the month. And February is Stout Month at the local brewery. The very best stouts Colorado has to offer will be on tap for 29 days, thanks to the bonus day!

The funny thing about the cancer treatment is how people respond. There's no hiding my face. My co-workers have been so supportive. My unit gave me some leeway at drill this weekend. Its all kind of awkward, so I just waited for my students to broach the subject. They have been so sweet, and asked some really good questions. Some people just pretend everything is normal. Some people crack a joke about sunscreen, only to feel like a few seconds later.

I hadn't thought about Benadryl. I can find any reputable source that says its okay to use lotion, but I've been using the Lubriderm when the itchy/pain wakes me up. The doc is checking me out tomorrow, but its driving me nuts. I had some extra painkillers from a surgery last year, and finally popped one. Hopefully that puts me to sleep.

Its supposed to be more itchy and more painful after I stop the cream, so I'm prepping. Benadryl and Aloe Vera sound good.

Thanks guys!

I note that after a half a bottle of rum people frequently say they can't feel their face. This might be a solution to let you sleep.

Cool

Hi Heather. I recently had to do a regimen of heavy steroids on my face as well. The flourorocil that I used opened up a Pandora's box of crud. As soon as I stopped the cream the old phiz returned to its old ugly self. Don't despair the worst is behind you.

If you can find a cream with lidocain in it that will numb the itching as well.

Thank you so much! I was hoping that was the case, but with 1-2 months of heal time I wasn't sure.

Great news: I don't have to put it on my face anymore! Started my regimen of Benadryl, Lubriderm base layer, and Vaseline top coat tonight. My face feels so much better.

I'll keep on treating my ears, neck, and forearms until they pop. Doc thinks maybe a week or two.

Did people stare at you in public? I'm a little eccentric, and once went out in town with turquoise goo in my hair that looked like Max Headroom with a faux hawk. I don't think anyone stared at me, but they are now.

Ask your doctor if it's okay to apply witch hazel to your face.

Quote:
Some people apply witch hazel directly to the skin for itching, pain and swelling (inflammation), eye inflammation, skin injury, mucous membrane inflammation, varicose veins, hemorrhoids, bruises, insect bites, minor burns, and other skin irritations.

Witch hazel contains chemicals called tannins. When applied directly to the skin, witch hazel might help reduce swelling, help repair broken skin, and fight bacteria.

Yeah, my derm called it 'maggot cream' because it went after the cancerous tissue but left the good tissue alone. As for going out in public - that's up to you but when I did it folks thought I looked better than normal

There is a cream to treat skin cancer? My Dad is continually having to have bits cut off. A relic of his service in Suez, Aden, Cyprus, Kenya etc.

Depends on the type and where located. In my case I had pre-cancerous lesions just under the surface. This is what the steroid creams treat. As for the other stuff..well I've had my share of cut and cauterize.
