If you're referring to the rebellion in Pavia against the French in May 1796 a good account of it can be found in Martin Boycott-Brown's The Road to Rivoli: Napoleon's First Campaign, pages 338-346.

I am sure we can stray farther from the point than that. Copenhagen wasn't bad.... Buenos Aires, Bhuttepore, Botany Bay?

Finally finished this book. Best leave the final word to His Grace the Duke of Wellington...

"Your Lordship will observe, that such a desperate action could not be fought, and such advantages could not be gained, without great loss; and, I am sorry to add, that ours has been immense. In Lieutenant-General Sir Thomas Picton, His Majesty has sustained the loss of an Officer who has frequently distinguished himself in his service; and he fell, gloriously leading his Division to a charge with bayonets, by which one of the most serious attacks made by the enemy upon our position was defeated."

One last thought on Sir Thomas... at Quatre Bras he led his men to the attack at a crucial moment. At Waterloo, already badly wounded, he died leading his men in a bayonet charge agin the Frenchies the way a fighting General should meet his end.
It made me think how fitting would it have been, for that other great fighting General, Marshal Ney to have died so well.. at the head of the Old Guard in their last desperate charge?

Just finished reading Dib's gift. His Grace was fortunate to have just enough of 'that article' to hold the line. The sacrifice of Picton's Division was immense and in a very short time... the Glory of their feat of arms in two pitched battles will last forever.
