He was actually the president when South Carolina first pulled their bullshit. Lincoln was only president-elect. Big difference.

Jefferson Davis?! Davis was one of the worst chief executives in the history of mankind. He was so consistently and unbelievably bad that one is almost tempted to believe that he was secretly aiding the Union.

No, Lincoln was not the best president in U.S. history, but he was certainly not the worst. I would put Washington, Jefferson, Coolidge, and Reagan above Lincoln.

Coolidge is an interesting nomination.Much of what I've read of him has been negative.

Reagan and Coolidge???

You really need to take a closer look at Reagan. If you think his Hollywood speech of "tear down this wall" won the Cold War your deeply mistaken. Then there is the Iran-Contra Affair and the 241 Marines killed under his watch, for nothing. The list is long.

Lincoln didn't CAUSE the war. Lincoln reacted to what the Confederates did. You blaming him for all their deaths is beyond ludicrous.

That's because SC was trying to go to war over the tariff, something the other Southern states wouldn't go along with.....the slavery issue in 1860 was something that they could all get behind.

It was Lincoln's purely sectional party created solely to be antagonistic to everything of political significance to Southerners. Lincoln was just a face of the party. But to somehow exempt Lincoln while blaming Southerners is equally ludicrous. Lincoln was pleased with the result of the Sumter expedition after his attempt at Pickens failed. To answer the OP, Hell no!

And the soon to secede states leaving Lincoln off the 1860 Presidential election ballot were not by that action even more sectional?!

During this period people had to mark a ballot and then cast it. People that could not write went by the symbol on the ballot. People could pretty well see who you voted for. I would not want to be someone trying to cast a write in ballot for Lincoln and the Republicans in 1860 in a Southern state.

Southern politicans contributed plenty to sectionalism but that wasn't one of them. That's not how ballots worked in the 19th century. The parties created and dispensed their own ballots. There was none printed in the South that I'm aware of.
