Sorry I haven't been on here much. I've been avoiding most of the so-called smart devices so far. Too much $$ for mostly trivial increases in convenience.

For what it's worth, ACG gets 100- 300 new 'bot accounts each day, nearly all from Russia. It's a two order of magnitude increase over the Chinese and Vietnamese spamming we saw five or six years ago. Most look designed for routine advertising spam.

Crap, just thought of a setting I need to check. Bye!

On a related note

Spambot registrations on ACG peaked at over 800/day shortly after Christmas from the ~200-300 per day average over the past six months.

By Jan 3 we were down to 100/150 per day and have been around 120 for the past week.

My guess; combination of peak spam associated with holiday shopping and new more secure tech gifts for Christmas replacing older malware infected devices.

Quite a good interview with Edward Snowden, bit long but well worth listening... even if just to find out more about Edwards' life, and his fascination with encryption.

Heartbleed vs. WannaCry: A tale of two cyber attacks

"Over the last couple of years in particular, the federal government had been very aggressive on some of the basics, such as patching vulnerabilities, which this was one of them. We have built-in a lot of blocking mechanisms,” Manfra said. “As we have really significantly upped our game in terms of doing some of these basics like patching critical vulnerabilities, one of our key efforts has been reducing the amount of time it takes to patch a critical vulnerability to under 30 days.”

An acquaintance who sold his IT security business two years ago might peg those attacks at monthly or weekly. One reason he sold out is the customers were not taking the threat seriously & his organization was having difficulty guaranting their work. One large problem is still senior management thinking they are exempt from the rules and compromising critical security for their own convenience. That attitude quickly trickles down to mid level management. He felt like he was wasting his time on remediation as customers failed at the preventitive security programs his business put in place.

I first started working in IT 50 years ago this year and senior management thought the rules didn't apply to them then (different rules, different problems same attitude) but doing some work on military systems for the MoD I found some senior officers in all three forces no better. Fifty years before then back in 1917 a frequent cause of breaches in security leading to the Germans intercepting British front line communications was some impatient senior officers not being prepared to wait whilst their messages were encrypted and sending on field telegraphs in clear. Things don't change much.

Take down: Hackers looking to shut down factories for pay

Quote:
AW North Carolina stood to lose $270,000 in revenue, plus wages for idled employees, for every hour the factory wasn’t shipping its crucial auto parts to nine Toyota car and truck plants across North America, said John Peterson, the plant’s information technology manager.

The company is just one of a growing number being hit by cyber-criminals looking for a payday.

THE US GIVES CYBER COMMAND THE STATUS IT DESERVES

Quote:
As part of transition to the status of a unified command, Secretary of Defense James Mattis will nominate a new Cyber Command leader. Previously, NSA director Michael Rogers oversaw the group. But Mattis is also mulling a potential separation from the NSA, the White House said Friday, which would be a much more intriguing step for Cyber Command.
