Service with 1st Cav

Assigned to 2nd Battalion, (Airborne), 19th Field Artillery (105) for entire tour 1966-1967 in Vietnam (my second). Was an assistant S3/S5 for a few months, writing the civic action plan for the battalion and leading an awards writing project for members of B Battery and their defense (12/26/66) of LZ Bird (drafted the two DSC's (Lt Piper/SFC Crain) and the Presidential Unit Citation). Was fire support officer to 2nd Battalion (Airborne), 8th Cavalry for a few months (more than 150 air assaults/10 hot, three major contacts). Had a TDY tour with Army Concept Team in Vietnam (ACTIV) as a project officer for the operational test and evaluation (OT&E) of the Jungle Canopy Platform System (JCPS) for a few months (wrote project report).

S-4, 1st Brigade, 1970-Aug 1971. Division Historian and Horse Platoon Leader, Aug 71 - April 1972. Presently have a nephew serving with 7th Cav as a Medic, just finished his 2nd tour with the division as a combat medic. Missed going to Vietnam with the Cav by the skin of my teeth in August 1965. In retrospect, I should have done it. I would have been a pathfinder in D Troop, 1st Sqdn, 9th Cav. Hindsight's 20/20.

Rode with the 1st Cav

All,

Spent six years in the 1st Cav. All with the 1st Bn, 8th Cavalry from Jul 1993 through June 1999.

B Co (Bandit 9). Visited California (NTC) and then Mississippi (NG Training) before moving to Kuwait (Aug95-Nov95) on an Intrinsic Action call (Thanks to Saddam's Son-in-laws wanting to take their families to Jordan for a nice vacation). Then California (NTC; watch GB play NE in the Superbowl the day after coming out of the box) before turning my position over to a "dud".

HHC (Hawk 9). Spent a few months training up and then putting the Battalion's equipment on a boat and deployed to Korea "Foal Eagle 97". Lovely vacation in the late fall/early winter on the Korean peninsula.... Without winter clothing. Then did a "change mission" to prepare for and deployment to Bosnia sept 98 - March 99.

Yeah I rode the ride very well for six long years and enjoyed every minute of it.

I was assigned to Div HQ in 1999 for about 6 months as an augment while 1CD was in Bosnia. I ran the Joint Visitors Bureau.

I was in Bco. 1-8Cav from March 1994 until June 2000. I was a 19K. ETS'ed in June 2000 and reenlisted in September 2001 for another 5 years, hit in Iraq, out finally in May 2006.

Agree with 1SG Kenneally, he was a "dud".
