Ancient wrecks found in Black Sea
On the BBC this morning an expedition plotting the deep sea bed in the Black Sea has revealed that its robotic submersibles have located many wrecks. These date from the 19th century to about 500BC and include Greek, Roman and Byzantine vessels. Because the deep waters of the Black Sea contain no oxygen and are also very cold organic material such as wood tends to be preserved and the scientists involved have reported that many vessels still have masts and describe seeing steering oars still attached. Essentially they are still intact.
However it is feared that by now they will have little physical strength and any attempt to raise them from the still dead water in which they lie would cause them to disintegrate. Instead it is suggested that robotic vehicles are used to explore them in situ and record them in digital form so that they can be recreated in virtual reality
