I need him to say that their cause was just, otherwise to me this is just patronizing to get votes. Taking a stand is meaningful and requires courage, especially on an issue that is controversial. Otherwise it is just lip service.

Exactly my point.
And I thought you once told me that your family fled from communism.

It's more likely from Stalin, in 1939, after the Stalin - Ribbentrop pact.
They had to leave everything behind, our pharmacy business, our Russian Jewish relatives (They destinguished themselves later in the Soviet Army) our Baltic sea cottage, our Jacht, our car and trucks and our beautyful and lush Riga residence.
Hitler compensated us with polish properties in Posnan, which my Grandpa and Oma didn't like, because they felt it was stolen from the polish property owners. Nevertheless, my Grandfather joined the Wehrmacht and because of his russian language skills, commandet a ROA company (Sonderfuehrer Z) to chase partisan in the bjelorussian forests, late in 1943. I don't know exactly what he did, he never wanted to talk about it. He was warranted by the soviet authorities after the war. I guess, it was not good.
My Mother ended up on my Dad's family farm in Westfalia, with the survivors of the family. All I know, War is Hell.

I thought your explanation of your family history spoke for itself and didn't need my comment.
