If you want to prevent criminals to use guns to commit crimes, there are only two possibilities :

a ) prevent them from having guns : but this is impossible

b) prevent them from using guns by introducing harsh punishment = death penalty .

The only prevention is repression : a hanging a day keeps the criminal away .

All the rest is beating around the bush .

Yeah, we do, for the UK it's too late. Then again ignorant people wouldn't know better.

And of course, the ridiculously easy availability of firearms in the United States has nothing to do with the sickening recurrence of these crimes 'cause as we all know guns don't kill people, psychopaths with a few dozen automatic assault rifles in their hotel rooms do.

That's a bit of tautology when boiled down, really.

Mass murder is committed by the insane because only the insane would commit mass murder.

It also reflects how subjective the idea of mental illness and violence is in these cases.

Agreed. It's why we have to fight to allow Americans to wear suicide vests on airplanes and maintain their own radiological "dirty bombs" at home. We've had centuries of liberals denying us the ability to properly defend ourselves from our neighbors and - more importantly - the state. The 2nd Amendment was meant to allow the people to defend themselves from homegrown tyranny. And that means being able to actually defeat the federal government.

Indeed! To continually resort to 18th and 19th century reasons for why we should own firearms is specious and out of sync with modern society. I honestly cannot picture any of our so called "citizen's militias" (primarily made up by a bunch of out of shape, beer drinking yahoos) standing even the remotest chance of coming out on top of a firefight with one of our reserve units. Even our reservists have recent combat experience in Afghanistan and are typically better trained and better armed. Those boys and girls (for that matter) would go through one of those silly "citizen militias" like a hot knife through butter.

Really? So it was the gun that attacked alone? Good logic there.

Out of curiousity...of the branches of the US military, would any/all of them actually engage in warfare against their own fellow citizens if ordered to by the government?
