Interest Check....Task Force Rainbow

Having gotten much more accustomed to the "Rainbow" game setup, and how much lower maintenance it is for both players and GM, I had a thought to combine the Rainbow concept with the known proclivity for players to like naval operations.

Here are the proposed bits:

1) Players will play as Captain of 1 (only 1) ship apiece, with one player functioning as TF Commander.

2) Players will operate as a Squadron (not wide ranging individual ships) in a mission oriented format with some defined objectives, and sometimes undefined objectives.

3) Players will have access initially to a very wide range of ships from which to pick theirs. NO AIRCRAFT CARRIERS or Submarines. Keep in mind that ships might not always get good supply from outside sources.....vessels that can bring supplies could be an important part of the Task Force (Hint).

4) Players will have to preserve their vessels whenever possible or choose to sail damaged ships rather than send them back to dry dock as the pool from which to pick a replacement ship for one sent to dry dock will be very small and the Admiral will select a replacement for any ship sunk without the player being able to choose.

5) Gameplay will follow an ahistorical campaign by TF Rainbow from December 24th, 1941 in the Pacific Theater until whenever. While battles and challenges will be similar to and in cases could directly follow WW2 naval battles, things won't always be precisely the same (because you lot are good at just picking up a book or internet and outthinking the historical commander's original decisions).

At two updates a week, I'm interested.

How many players are you realistically looking at to make it launchable?

4-5, or a few more to add diversity?

I think an upper limit of 9, with a minimum of 4 would suffice. Too few and scenarios have to be custom written to deal with the lack of numbers, too many and there won't be very many fleets to fight...

To expand on the ship selection:

You can be any allied powers ship that's not a sub or aircraft carrier that was commissioned prior to December 1st, 1941. I'm going this route to let players have fun with a few 'what ifs' rather than a rote reenactment of certain early war campaigns.....of course I think things will even out in the end regardless.

Yes, this includes the minor players, including those that historically did not get into the Pacific Theater.

Prince of Wales and Repulse were sunk on schedule as were all other ships sunk prior to the start date. However, if you want to choose a ship that was damaged at Pearl Harbor specifically, it's allowed as it's plausible (however unlikely) that a ship could be detached from Pearl prior to the air raid.

So, to answer the burning question, yes, this means that every auxiliary, sub hunter, destroyer, cruiser, battleship, and battlecruiser in commission by the Allies is available at start, in its configuration as of December 1st, 1941. After start, there will be a small 'pool' of available ships that will be rotating and you won't always know what's available.

I am interested in a Dixie Class Destroyer Tender. As big as a Cruiser, these repaired Destroyers and the systems on them. They also carried some 5" ammunition, depth charges and could repair torpedoes, carried a few as well.

I'm sure it would be useful....although you might want to make sure that TF Rainbow has ships that will need it first....

I'm not sure about this one. Lacks the freedom of prior naval games and is set in WWII where aircraft rule the skies and the seas.

Very good reasons for both:

1) The free wheeling games we've done before in the naval side always run into a problem. They basically require the GM to be on vacation, and turn their garage into a plotting room. The time requirements are huge, which results in slow turnarounds, slippage, and routinely in the game dying.....the last couple of times it died before turn 1 was over due to slippage. The Rainbow model is simpler and smaller in scope, allowing for faster turn times and less GM pressure.

2) All recent naval games have been sailing, WW1, or "Oceanic Interwar" eras. WWII has been neglected, so it's got more new options than any of the other eras at this moment. As for the carrier restriction, there weren't all that many carriers in 1941, and their locations and assignments were pretty much set in stone. There were a LOT of engagements that didn't involve carriers, especially early and mid war. And finally, the size of the TF is too small for a carrier.....any carrier would just encourage a response in kind and mean that the TF would be mercilessly hunted and handled....and a TF with multiple carriers at this size would be horribly vulnerable to night attacks. For the moment going without a carrier actually makes sense in a TF this size.....though at some point a carrier WILL become available.

I suppose...

I'll take a Benson-Livermore class DD, say DD 440 Ericsson. I'd expect the Ericsson to have the first round of war mods (well, kind of pre-war / war mods) already done giving her:

4 5"/38 (#3 removed) with a Mk 37 director, 5 21" TT (the aft bank removed), 8 20mm AA, 4 K guns aft (2 per side) along with 2 DC racks on the stern.

SC radar, and a QC sonar set.

That's for December 24, 1941.

I just don't think the time period or setup are my style. I'll have to pass.

What about a St Louis Class CL or a Belfast CL? What are our options? Destroyers in this period are lacking in AA unless the Main Guns are Dual Purpose. Also Destroyers are not equal in Torpedoes.

Your options are:

Any Surface Combatant (not Carrier or Submarine) that was in commission on December 1st 1941. PoW and Repulse have been sunk unfortunately, as has Hood. The Configuration will be the Configuration as of December 1941 (for ships that were constantly upgraded or changed).

A few ships that come to mind as the 'extreme end':

USS North Carolina
USS St Louis

The Atlanta Class are unfortunately barely too new....Atlanta was launched but not Commissioned in time.

And remember there are British Ships as well, plus technically Soviet ships, Dutch Ships, French Ships (Free French that 'fled to Britain or the US' for our purposes), etc.
