Hussars "TOTENKOPF"

Hello

I'm a new italian user.

I am seeking information on the use of the German light cavalry at the beginning of the conflict. Specifically regarding the hussars "TOTENKOPF".

I post a picture of some officers of the regiment in 1914, and a box with the symbol of the regiment and some of the IWW decorations.

Thanks for your help!

A number of German Hussar regiments displayed the deaths head including no 1, no 2 and no 17. It was also used by some Brunswick infantry units for example the 92nd Infantry regiment displayed the Toten kopf along with the campaign honour Peninsular - this latter being an echo of the Black Brunswick Legion that served with Wellington's army in the Peninsular and at Waterloo.

The 17th Hussars were also a Brunswick unit 17th Brunswick Hussar Regiment (Braunschweigisches Husaren-Regiment Nr.17), ns were certainly using the deaths head in the early 19th century. Vol 1 of Peninsular Journal of Charles Crowe of Coddenham, Suffolk: Soldier 1785-1854. describes their hussars after resisting Napoleon as having the emblem.
Quote:
large caps were covered at top with shinny black leather surmounted with a tuft of long black horse hair. Below was a white metal plate perforated to represent Death's head and marrow bones, the monogram of their motto - 'No Quarter! Victory or Death!'
In 1914 the 6 squadrons of the 17th "Death's Head" Hussars were the X Corps' reconnaissance element, three squadrons to each of the corps' two divisions whilst the the 92nd Brunswick Infantry Regiment was part of the 40th Infantry Brigade of the 20th Infantry Division. In the peninsular they appear to have served as riflemen alongside the British 95th regiment

I think that the box of decorations may have been assembled post WW1. The Deaths head does not match any of those used in the Hussar regiments during WW1 although it is closest to No 1 and No 2.. It has a distinct 1930s or even WW2 feel to it. Do you have any more detail?

The box of medals I now think is not from the Hussars but someone who was in the Freikorps 1919 -1920. They used a deaths head like that and also the symbol of crossed swords behind a Stahlhelm was the badge of their association.

What about Hannoverian Light Cavalry? I thought some of the German Legion in Spain wore the Totenkopf emblem?

It's a WW1 wound badge in silver.

I also remember the name Totenkopf from the movie Sky Captain and the World of Tommorrow.

Not forgetting the 17th Lancers of the British Army.
Their badge was the skull and bones with the Regimental motto "OR GLORY"

Certainly, even following their merger with the 21st, although further mergers have formed the Royal Lancers (Queen Elizabeth's Own).
