If you haven't watched John Carpenter's Dark Star you are missing a true classic, especially if you are a veteran.

Ship's computer, "Sergeant Pinback, it's time to feed the alien..."

"Aww, do I have to...?"

No one has so far mentioned the incomparable Blade Runner? Logan's Run? Marooned?
The Day The Earth Stood Still? (The original, not the Keanu piece of crap) The original Time Machine? And how about The Martian Chronicles?

And lately, Days Of Thunder, and excellent "what if" film about the terrors of time travel.

Interstellar failed many reality tests, not least of which was traveling through a black hole, and Matthew McConaughey failed to generate any real emotion even at the very end when he meets his dying daughter. And how does anyone decide to land on a planet without any land at all - just endless water?

Another special effects only dog of a film was 2012 - The only good part was Woody Harrelson standing there broadcasting as he is literally blown away!
Interesting list.

The Day the Earth Stood Still and The Time Machine both benefited from the focus on actors and human drama over special effects. Interstellar suffered from the same problem.

Logan's Run was impressive at the time but hasn't aged well as the graying of society has overtaken the youth bulge assumed in the plot. Blade Runner is actually happening in real time.

Star Wars Rebels has to be up there in the best Sci-Fi category. The only other time there was a animated Star Wars show was back in the 1980s with Droids and Ewoks. Another Sci-Fi dud for me was Sea Quest DSV its was basiclly a poor remake of Voyage to the Bottm of the Sea.
